NASCAR Should Be Shut Down

Definitely.

Luckily it's only traditon for some, and not the majority. NASCAR is
basically considered in the same category as the WWF by most people in this
country. I was glad to see the F1 event at Indianapolis was such a success.

There is a sports radio station in Philadelphia that is one of the most
listened to in the country, and no one ever mentions NASCAR. The NFL, NBA,
MLB, NHL, college basketball, colege football, just about anything BUT
NASCAR is discussed by the hosts and the callers.

If you are going to quote me, how about at least quoting the whole sentence?
I actually said, "And no, I don't have the time to reply to all of the posts
in this thread
although I'll try my best.  :-( "

Sorry about that.  Looks like I didn't read your post very carefully.  I
thought you were claiming Nascar had a better safety record than F1, when
you were just pointing out a factual error in DF's post.  Your comment was
reasonable.

Sorry, for some reason I thought Marcello was 1992. Brayton was 1996.

NASCAR Should Be Shut Down

If anything can be ludicrous about this past week, the so-called sports
radio
hosts have been.  They have been flailing about like beached whales as they
try
and understand restrictor plates and Hans devices.
Wanna hear a guy drowing?  Just listen to any sports radio show this week,
the hosts are sinking in their lack of knowledge about just what racing and
Nascar racing in paticular is.
Now back on-topic....you basic premise is that F1 is far superior because
they have had no deaths since Senna.   Thats true, but it took Senna's
death, and Roland Ratzenberger's and one near fatality (Karl Wendlinger?)at
Monoco to prod the FIA into action.  2 1/2 deaths is close enough to 4
deaths to equal out.  Any death is too much.  The FIA already had their
wakeup call.  Now Nascar has their own..  This does not make one series
superior to the other.  And the results since Senna's death, while safer,
have been a giant
reduction in racing.  F1 these days is more like a hotlap competiton.
Bring back the days of Mansel and Senna, or Lauda and Prost.  Give us some
RACING, that is what is lacking from F1 these days.  And from CART for that
matter as well.  In the past four years, the best door to door racing I have
seen has been not Nascar, or F1 or Cart or Sportscars, but touring car
events.
What is it about the circuts and cars that promote such close racing?
F1 needs to find that magic...so does CART.

I'll agree with all that except the real cars part.  The cars run the
premier
Rally events are shells, everthing below the surface is not even close to
whats on the 'real' cars.  case in point:  Find out how long in minutes and
how many steps it takes to start Richard Burn's Subaru....
As for the rest...the top drivers are truly SOME of the best racers
around.

Ever think LOCATION might have something to do with it, oh godly one? The US is
the fourth largest nation in terms of land mass.

Maybe not at the pace that Senna's did (for instance, the US won't arrest ISC
officials), but it will happen now. The media outcry will be too great.

I don't remember F1 cars being able to accelerate from a dead stop to 400 kph
in 2 seconds either. Logic would dicate that it would be the most dangerous of
all motor sports.
