I read this elsewhere after I posted my reply to you! Wow. Ron Dennis can be
a real idiot can't he :-).

Accepted, it may be difficult or even impossible to prove that Ferrari
gained no significant advantage but I honestly believe that 1cm of barge
board couldn't make any significant difference. The wear on the Ferrari
tyres seems to be more of a moot point however. I have to admit to not
knowing what the rules say, I would be interested to know if they specify
what the punishment is for having over-size body work. If the rules
specifically say that dq is the only consequence then I would have to agree
with you that Ferrari should be excluded.

What about when James Hunt had his dq overturned and went on to win the
championship? Surely the governing body does have the option - or are you
just saying that any other decision would be impossible morally?

It's not just Bernie's Wallet that is bulging. I think that all of the big
teams have gained massively from Bernie's antics. Bernie seems to me to have
been very clever in sharing the money around just enough to keep his power
base happy.

I would enjoy a show down in Suzuka but I agree that the long term interests
of the sport are more important.

They can still tell Ron where to go :-)

You are so right! It's the human condition to hark back to halcyon days.

The 50s was a great era, but then so was the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Some
of the qualities that existed in the 50's have diminished, such as
spotsmanship and "fun". These have been replaced by other qualities such as
the technology, the scale of F1, the size of the audience etc. It's
unrealistic to expect things to stay the same, although this doesn't mean we
should let Bernie's antics go unchecked!

I have been happier about the state of F1 this year than over the last
couple of years. I think it's actually getting better :-)

And what was really idiotic was his race strategy for Hakkinen!  Running him on
the harder, slower tires that could have enabled him to only make one stop, yet
going for a two stop race, and keeping him out behind Shumacher for the entire
first half of the race.  So they saved 2 seconds on the first refuelling, but
lost 20+ seconds on the second one, plus some time behind Schumacher, and
possibly some time for carrying a heavier fuel load than they needed early in
the race.  Baffling.

From www.atlasf1.com
As all sides prepare for the hearing on Ferrari's appeal this coming Friday,
new information is being revealed over how Ferrari's infringement was
discovered.

Today's Daily Express reveals that the Ferraris of Eddie Irvine and Michael
Schumacher had passed the technical test of the scrutineers at Sepang, they
were weighed and cleared and were about to leave the inspection area when
FIA's Joe Bauer suddenly called them back, only to immediately spot the
missing 10mm on the cars' barge-boards.

This lead many within the F1 circus to believe that Bauer was tipped off by
someone from a competing team as to the existence of the infringement. "We
think someone alerted the FIA to this problem whereas before they have never
given this a moment's thought, like the rest of us," said Jean Todt, the
Ferrari sporting director. "I don't know who it was. We will have to wait
and see."

Something fishy here...

Exactly the same here.
In fact, my dad (who has lived in the same house in a small country town for
almost 50 years) still leaves the back door unlocked when he's out.  That's
so any friends or neighbours who call in to drop something off can pop it
inside out of the weather.

It's similar here, Mark, although there are safeguards in place (National
rust, Heritage Commission etc.) to make it harder for developers to run
riot.
