I must agree with you there, here is one of our databases, I'd hate to
run it on a Mac...

Memory: 6912M real, 107M free, 5165M swap in use, 6705M swap free

PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE  SIZE   RES STATE    TIME    CPU COMMAND
  623 sybase     2   0    0 2006M 1999M cpu/1  505.8H 16.45% dataserver
  822 sybase     2   0    0 2006M 1999M cpu/0  300.8H 14.95% dataserver
  825 sybase     2  10    0 2006M 1999M cpu/8  311.2H 14.71% dataserver
  824 sybase     2  31    0 2006M 1999M cpu/4  311.7H 11.80% dataserver
  823 sybase     2   0    0 2006M 1999M cpu/9  306.4H 11.74% dataserver

(For those who think 5*1.9 GB is more than 6.5 GB the answer is shared memory.)

Guess I should have stuck with Dos6.2 and my 486 DX2-66 then. :-)

They might. XP has some Dos compatibility. There is a utility in the
system32 folder called "forcedos.exe".

Well, that answers my last questionn to Chris. Guess I won't be using that
utility then.
Back to Win98 soon and then I can use Ghost again.

Thx, looks interesting. But can I run Photoshop and Pagemaker on it too?

OK thx, but can I backup to cdrom with it? I don't want it taking up more HD
space than XP already is with it's bloatware. With Ghost I always burned the
image file to cdrom and deleted it from the HD.

Info on Pagemaker:

Info on Photoshop:

However, I'll also mention that Photoshop has nothing on The GIMP.
http://www.racesimcentral.net/  And that there are numerous HTML editors available
as well.  Among the better ones are Bluefish:

If that setup would run the titles you own, then I'd agree.    My
beeelabored point was/is....pretty much EVERYTHING ran and MOST
compatibility issues have been sorted out of the preXP os's.  There is no
single feature in XP that improves my *** experience.  So spending a
pretty big chunk of cash to CHANGE a box that was already working just seems
wrong to me...If XP had some whizbang feature or a must have APP that only
XP could handle, then I'd probably be already there.  But dangit...I boot
win98se, I choose a program, it runs.  What MORE is there to an os?
as for Nvidia....I grew up expecting new drivers about every DX upgrade,
the previous drivers worked on everything..  So this musical chairs thing
with some driver versions working with titles in group A and some drivers
only working with titles in group B etc was very disconcerting.  Until the
Feds jumped into my bank account I was this "" close to buying a GeForce.  I
think the 3's and from what I've heard the 4's are amazing pieces of
hardware.  But this convoluted driver system just has me boggled.

The big issue is that it is a protected OS and has much better memory
management and is not as prone to crashing as Win98 and yet still runs all
your games and apps. OK , a few games have issues on it but not many. But, I
hate XP because of it's alck of security out of the box and the activation
thingy so I may revert to Win98 soon myself. It is a better OS than Win98
though. Them's the facts.

Well, it's much better than  a company that doesn't release drivers often
enough. ATI, for example. I'm using an R8500 right now and it it wasn't for
hacked drivers I would be seriously pissed at my poor purchase decision.

Thx for the links. I've saved it to disk for future reference. One major
issue I have come across with Linux though is that I have an ATI R8500 and
the only drivers availalble for that card has no 3D support under Linux,
only 2D, and then it's not even accelerated 2D.
Kind of a waste of an expensive card to run it on that OS.

Some of the information here may be helpful, Marc:
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm
You may also find useful information in Help and Support by doing a search
for "backup."  This can be initiated either by using the Windows interface
or from the command line.  Personally, I choose the files to be backed up,
zip them and then write to CD.  But there are many ways of accomplishing the
backup, depending on the user preference.
