Oh..but Hans...it's only the 'other' vidcards that have 'unusable'
features...hehe

I have great fun building computers,so I have 2 under my desk.....
One a P3-800 with V5 on board. One a P4-1900 with GF3 Ti200
(which will happily overclock to 240.. got lucky). So can play all
my legacy stuff (Tribes, Falcon etc...) fast in Glide on the
V5 + P3-800 and get reasonable speed on latest titles in D3D
on the GF3+ P4-1900....

( Hard-hat mode definitely ON..... )

....and for that statement...you should be sorry..hehe

Don't go out on a limb now..hehe
It's just so ironic that there has been such a flip-flop in the 3dfx-nVidia
comparisons. I still remember the 3dfx sheep saying 'our voodoos blow away
that nvidia card of yours and so what if the quality isn't as good'...hehe
Funny how that happens depending on how they are losing...hehe..of course
with the GF3....they can't win either way!!!

Sounds like fun to me......I still like firing up Descent/Descent2 on the V2
I still have...hehe..but now with some OpenGL ports....don't even need a
Voodoo for that. It just shows you that had 3dfx used OpenGL instead of
Glide......we could have been much happier these days.
Just like Mame32....soon we can do everything in emulation...hehe

You wont here me saying ATI has perfect drivers, but a lot of folks are
happily running their 8500 as a replacement for their V5.

The voodoo card should not look better in OpenGL games, if it does then
ATI has something screwed up. But it wouldnt surprise me, several Radeon
drivers do not show certain lights in OpenGL games such as Elite Force last
time I checked.

>Ive seen them both side by side running the same mission...same
>settings....you need to do that to understand.

So what? The V5 has no anisotropic, pretending that texture clarity will be
the same is ludicrous. Statements like that from you pretty much emphasize
that you have little to no objectivity.

Wrong, since you can for OpenGL. Only for D3D do you need a 3rd party
app and that works fine.

For your history of being a moron, you should be sorry. hehe.

Idiot.  2D quality is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than having slightly better
gradients in the sky when you're playing a shoot-em-up game.  The
Voodoo's were PLENTY good at 3D quality, and, unlike the crappy
nVidia-based product, had excellent 2D as well.  GET IT?

Losers like you, who can't think their way out of a wet paper bag,
sure never win....  hehe.

> ?? here let me explain

No it wasn't. ;-) Just check in with PD, he'll set you right, hehe.

Anyway, FSAA is nice to have, but it's not everything. Far from it.

lacking.

My, my. Some 3dfx fan(atics) sure are defensive about their item of worship,
rotfl... Yes it is.

4x FSAA on a V5 is 4x the fillrate and 4x the video scanout bandwidth. This
makes for a serious hit in framerates for games that are fillrate intensive.
This is not something that is debatable, after all, even when overclocked to
183MHz, a V5 only manages something like 366Mpix/s of theoretical fillrate
when multi-texturing, and in practice it will be much less than that. Factor
in FSAA, some overdraw, and things will start to chug rather quickly.
Flightsims and other not very fillrate-demanding games might run well, but
for other purposes the V5 is limited by it's technical inferiority. It's
only natural, this always happens in the computer world, when Doom3 hits the
stands my GF3 will be obsolete too. There's something for you to feel smug
about. ;-)

No, and no. And it wouldn't perform any better even if I did/had. I might
TRICK myself into believing that, but it wouldn't be true.

 Bye!
/HB.

ZOD,  I don't mind going to the next latest fastest chips and paying
the cash.  But....  I don't like them cutting corners on quality.  The
2D is the corner they are cutting now and I don't appreciated it.

I want my cake and eat it to.  80% of the time I am reading emails and
newsgroups etc.  So I would think most people would want the best 2D
the cards has diminished.  I mean worse than 4 years ago.
(its a given these days) but its obvious (with the exception of
canopus GF3, which is hard to find) the 2D quality on just about all

So what do I need?  Two cards like the VooDoo 2 days one for 2D and
one for games?

My old V5 is not considered the best in 2D either.  Matrox owns that
area.

The card I want is the canopus GF3.  Its suppose to have better 2D
quality.

As for the best choice for the available cards I would have to say the
ATI 8500 but the drivers still suck.  So I digress back to my old V5
until things get better.

Look...I am sure there are some nVidia based cards that have sub-par 2d
quality but just about every one I have seen is equal to ANY modern 3d card
on the market including Matrox. I am running a Ti GF3 and it's very nice on
my 22" Viewsonic.
This 'nVidia's 2d is crap' stuff is getting real old and it's based on
nothing but a couple of idiots saying it was so.

Well......I have seen all the top cards side by side and it it sooooooooo
close.....stupid to argue over anyway.

Also...keep in mind that this quality issue on a few selected cards is due
to a poor quality filter, not nVidia's GPU.

I wouldn't own an ATI either.....but I'd have an 8500 before I'd even think
about buying a V5 now....

>This 'nVidia's 2d is crap' stuff is getting real old and it's based on

Absolutely false.  Rather, it's a well-documented shortcoming of the
nVidia-based video cards, historically.  If they FINALLY fixed the GF3
(jury is still out, I'd say), fine.

There has been NO "flip-flop".  The POINT is that 2D quality is MUCH
more important, VASTLY more important, than small differences in 3D
quality.  Always has been, always will be.  It is NOT WORTH trading 2D
quality for 3D quality OR for 3D frame rates!  GET IT?

No, I'd feel snug about not wasting hundreds of dollars every few
