So the big question is that has anybody used these substitutes in a car
that requires freon?  Are they available at your local auto parts store?

<usual thread cut>

Unfortunately, when the semester starts, the pinheads will go back to
school with the normal people.

We will get a flurry of uneducated, brainless posts that justify
involuntary euthanasia on the first day of school, and then we will see
the ones with the some clue and politeness posting over the following months.

Sigh.

Sorry Martine but I think Jerry B. has a point here.

Agreed.

I don't know Martine personally so... not much I can say here.  I've
probably said too much all ready in the wrong news group so I'll lay
off the stupid rental car tricks thread.

}On page 128 of the July issue of Car Craft magazine there is an article
}that says" Pennzoil FR-12 Refrigerant" Pennzoil Products has become the
}distributor for FRIGC, FR-12 refrigerant. Its properties are virtually
}identical to R-12, also known as Freon, the most widely used automotive
}A/C system refrigerant. However, R-12 is now banned by the EPA.* RE-12
}solves the problem of having to undergo costly changes with an R-12 A/C
}system. It's ready to use with only  minimal system adaptation and has
}been accepted by the EPA. New cars now use R-134a and older R-12 systems
}can't use R-134a without significant alterations. The FR-12 refrigerant
}is compatible with R-12 systems. Contact your local auto parts dealer.
}
}*Production of R-12 is banned not the use.
}
}
}The above not including the asterisk is a word for word quote from
}Pennzoil and Car Craft mag. So this stuff is apparently real and
}it is not 134a. It looks like anyone hoarding R-12 is going to be
}out of alot of money in the near future.

Not likely.  EPA has been banning the substitutes almost as fast as
they appear.

I was told that the patent on R-12 was about to expire so the patent
holder said it was no longer any good so now they can sell the new stuff
with a new patent.
Don't know if it is true but it came from a non-partial mechanic who had
no axe to grind. As for the EPA, I am sure they can be influenced

Well, no.  Higher octane fuel actually makes an engine run cooler.  And
100/130 was green...

Strange... The Explorer isn't sold in Australia....  So the
story must be bogus.

The only US product we get is the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.
You mean a Yankie 4WD can't do what a japanese 4wd can do?

Says something about the American product.

Many apologies for the continuation of this idiotic spam. I intended to
e-mail this message back to the little child who started it all, S. L. M. I
have been sending him a copy of each of his spams. I wouldn't want to
suggest that everybody do that, but...

How about this, drain all the oil out, and see how far the car can go.
Like a competition, for example take a toyota vs. a chevy. See which
car can get farther on no oil. Or better yet, in a six cylinder car,
take 4 cylinders out and see the 0-60 time. Boy this list can go on, I
appreciate the tips.

Some idiot is setting at the light

When did the Continental go to front wheel drive?  I had a Continental
company car several years ago (what a BOAT!) and it was still a
rear-wheel drive car.

Read the two earlier posts on what higher octane does, cannot do, and
what harm it can actually cause to an engine.  It does not always cause
an engine to run cooler, and in some cases can actually cause an engine
to run hotter and even severely damage some engines.  Not rumor, fact!
It's amazing how few people know what octane is and does.
