Ron,

That's just it.  It's a good simulator minus the fancy, real fancy graphics.
You either take this, or you go for EA's NFS stuff.  That's eye candy plus
arcade.  I don't like arcade type games; I go for realism.  Thus, GPL or
SCGT....

If you want to look at great quality racing pictures, buy yourself a
magazine.

For the best Sim, I prefer GPL.

I dunno, but why is everybody so crazy about GPL ?? What's the deal ?
They should rename this group to rec.gpl.freaks or something like that !

Yeah, I recently downloaded the demo. I don't know about you guys, but
the terrible in-game graphics just made me laugh out loud (LOL), excuse
me. No, I do have a high-tech system. Eeh.. well, perhaps the gameplay is
better ; wasn't able to check it out (because I was stunned by the game's
spectacular eye-candy, all the time).

Is GPL the "Wolfenstein" of the racing sims ?

Ron

If you had to laugh out loud about the graphics you probably do not have a
high-tech system...

Sure, Need for Speed: High Stakes and some other racers have lush
graphics sporting the very latest in eye candy.  GPL is not about eye
candy.  If eye candy is what you crave at all costs, there are many
other games which do a good job of providing it.  GPL is about
revolutionary realism in vehicle dynamics, and learning to control and
race cars at the very limit of grip.  The sensation of speed is also
tremendous, as you would know if you ever did the Masta Kink at Spa
almost flat out!

I know there are some people that can't appreciate GPL, and that's
cool, but try to understand that it's not lush graphics that has
hooked people in this newsgroups, but incredible sim realism and
fantastic multiplayer.

Randy

The deal is that GPL blows everything else away. Anyone who
frequests this NG knows that I thought F1RS was the best F1
sim. Well after the FF patch was released I got the game. Then
I played F1RS again. It reminded me of a***pit cutout on a stick
in front of my monitor. It has an absolutely terrible driving model.
GPL is where it is at. The other stuff (even ICR2) is chickenshit.
IMHO :-)

Terrible? I have a P2-450, 128 MB of ram, a 16MB TNT card, a 12MB
V2 card and a partridge in a pear tree. Know what? I think the graphics
in GPL (I am using 3dfx) are much better than F1RS. I do think the graphics
in SCGT are still the best though.

Sounds like a personal problem.

Don't know what you mean by this. But if you have a FF wheel, then
GPL is a must have. Nothing else can compare.

dont know what ron's been smokin, or maybee his systems been smokin. My

beautiful race sim ever

I have no idea.... It has gotten out of hand a bit hasn't it.

hehehe, I've said that before, maybe its time they ***ywell do get one:-)

Like so many games/sims before it, the demo sucked.... I hated the demo like
hell..... Then Since everyone said the full one was so brilliant I spotted
it on sale and decided to try it..... sure enough the full one was better
but still you would swear that this ws the GOD of the sim world, come on! It
good, its fun, its realistic, its a great sim but alot of guys have gone
overboard. The graphics are NICE but they are too dull and matted adn things
like buildings around Monaco could use some shading to show well shadows and
of course wear and tear....... they look a bittoo perfect which gices thema
cartooney look but I recomend GPL but its not as if GPL is the last sim we
will ever play like some seem to think.

Come again?

they are crazy about gpl because its the only racing game that can truly be
called a 'simulation'...coupled with the fact that the graphics, the
gameplay, the way the car feels whilst driving and now with  force feedback
with the new 1.1 patch it can't be beaten, no game comes close and yes i've
played them ALL. I take it you either dont have  a 3d accelerator in which
case you didnt go to the graphics options before playing or you have a tnt
and didnt get the opengl patch to run in accelerated mode...

its nearly 2 years old and STILL it looks better than say...official formula
one...

That's cause GPL is such a great game. It is. It deserves attention.

As far as the graphics go, I think you're probably running it in software mode.
When I first fired it up I thought the graphics, although not necessarily the
most important part of a racing sim, were pretty outdated. That plus the
horrible sound and the fact that I hadn't bought a steering wheel yet really
made me think the game was garbage.

If you have a 3dfx card turn on 3dfx mode, 640x480, all graphics options turned
up. The graphics, while not exactly "lush", are certainly as good as I would
expect them to be. If you're running your sound with the default 4 channels,
turn it up to 16; the 16-channel sound is great. Lastly, buy a steering wheel
(which you may or may not already have). Of all the racing sims I've tried over
the past couple of months (I'm new to the racing sim thing) this game is the
best I've tried (along with Viper Racing ;). All I can say is try the demo
again. You shouldn't be disapointed (although you may still be for all I know
;).

Graham, you are overlooking the fact that opinions regarding such features
as graphics and sound are totally subjective:  what appeals to one may not
appeal to another.

For example, I cannot abide the style of the graphics in Eidos' F1 Racing
sim but absolutely love the pastel shades used GPL for such circuits as
Zandvoort and Silverstone.  Others opionions are completely the opposite but
this doesn't make one person right and the other wrong....it's simply a
matter of personal taste.

Physics and AI behaviour, on the other hand, can be assessed objectively and
it is here that GPL sits at the pinnacle of racing sims.

Well i don't know about you, but I think the graphics in GPL are not that
bad.

I bought GPL because it is the BEST sim at this point in time, not cause its
"Pretty".
If you play games to see pretty graphics go but Incoming.
Its real pretty & shit to play.
Perhaps it's just that GPL is too hard for you ?
Stick to NFS.
