gpl 1.1 freezes, lock ups

Hi,
Well, loving GPL I anticipated soooo much for the patch for having FF
But I cannot drive for 5 minutes, mostly less, and then I get lock ups.
The sound continues in "frozen time" It repeats continuesly the last
milliseconds or so.
I notice when it locks, the wheel turns (slowly) left to the max, all by
itself during the first second of the lock up. Then, sometimes the
"game"continues to lock up again a tenth or a fifth second later. Always I
have to reset the computer.
The system I have
"Celeron 300 a o'clocked to 450. Super cooler. The mobo monitor says maximum
30 degree Celsius. (that is cool, less than your body temp) even after an
intense game like Unreal
256 mb ram cas 2 125 mhz.
Win 98 with service pack 1
dx6.1
Diamond Viper 550 (TNT); driver:  Riva ref. 4.11.01.0203
Open Gl settings: Enable buffer region extension
Sound: Diamond mx300  driver Vortex AU8830 date 6-23-1999
I never experienced lock ups with GPL vs 1.00 albeit in 3dfx v2 mode with
lot of cursor shadows in the menu's. The game visuals worked perfectly
though.
Logitech FF. driver 3.20.327
GPL core ini at default
Logitech settings, at 100%, no center spring
With the patch the 3dfx menus were flickering all over the place and could
not be used, so   I switched over to open gl and I got perfect visuals
(1024x768)
the FF is dream, but    i still need to learn the fine inner meanings of the
forces IF the game allows me to play...

So what can I do to prevent the lock ups??
:)

This happened to me once yesterday, which is the first day I had the
Microsoft wheel. I had set the ff latency to 0.000, changed it to 0.010 and
it happened no more. Might well be coincidence though, I did not test for
that long.

the lock ups are gone I now use the Creative voodoo2 with the newest 3dfx
reference drivers. The flickering horrible menu images came out the the triple
buffering setup that I used in the 3dfx adapter menu.
So my problems are related to the open gl configuration

Bart,

I don't know if this is a good thing or not. But since I installed the
patch and got a MSFF wheel, I do have been experiencing those random
lockups. Rarely if ever had them before. I thought that it was something in
my system that I messed up. But from you post,it is not only me.

The default latency is .085. Why did you change it to so low a number
when the default value was designed for the MSFF wheel?

What he means is the horrible flickering in the GPL-Menus, coupled with
freezing-mouse-cursors...........my record ATM is 38 frozen cursors on the
screen, makes it hard sometimes to know which one to click :))
Kyrill, could you please describe exactly what you did to solve that
problem? It's getting on my nerves, too! I'm using an Orchid Righteous 3D
Voodoo1 (YES, 1!!)
Keep smiling! :))

Well, I did not like the way the ff felt, so I started to experiment. The
1.1 readme advised to start at 0.000 and work upwards from there. I liked it
better at 0.000, but then GPL locked up and since it was the last thing that
was changed, I changed it to 0.010.
I am not sure how that works out. I think the delay can only be an integer
number of ticks where one tick = 1/36 secs or 0.027s. So the 0.085 in the
sample.ini is 3 ticks.

I have also reduced the damping to 15 or so, and increased the max torque to
450. And the ff level for the wheel in control panel is at low. Haven't
finished tweaking though.

If that is what he meant, you need to disable Triple-Buffering in the
advanced options in the 3DFX applet in control panel/display.

Ed,
I am using the above card under Win95 and don't get an option to fiddle with
Triple-Buffering, using glide2x.dll v. 2.43, driver release 3.00.00, any
hint? ( I wear *stron* glasses, maybe should get new ones?)........if it's
Win95-related, I am quite happy with my running system and don't really want
to upgrade to Win98.........any workaround for Win95? (registry?) .........
If it's glide-related, I've tried copying all other availeable *.dll's into
my GPL-dir, but GPL will then only start in Direct 3d-mode, so that's no
cure for me either.......any hints on that one?
Thanx and keep smiling! :))
