RBR lock ups / freezes

by Chris Bradle » Mon, 27 Sep 2004 07:13:21

RBR installed recently locks up & freezes or sometimes bombs out to Windows.
I've tried all the new drivers I can think of:
Nvidia Nforce2 4.27 (Asus A7N8X mobo with onboard sound)
ATI Catalyst 4.7 (Radeon 9500 pro 128Mb)
DirectX 9.0c
RBS 1.01 patch has been applied
Sound acceleration set down to basic.
It fails after about 5 minutes of driving stages or rally school.
O/S is Win ME & CPU is Athlon XP 2800, 512MbRAM

Any ideas?

Since RBR can't go to the desktop and come back (it just crashes if you try
to alt-tab out of it. Maybe you have something that is taking "focus" from
RBR, making it minimize and crash? Anything running on your system by any
chance, antivirus, autoupdate crap, messenger stuff?

reduce graphic options, set agp aperature to 32 or 64, toggle agp fast
write, drag the agp slider in the smartgart section of advanced display
options right down, look in your event viewer for anything particular
occuring as it crashes.

Thanks - tried AGP aperature at 64 & 32.  Dragged Smart Gart to nil & 4x,
disabled fast writes.  Reduce graphics in RBR and Direct3D settings.  This
has made some improvement - now it takes about 10 minutes before it crashes.
BTW what' s "event viewer"?

Any more ideas??

Chris

I think he mentioned he's using ME, so no admin tools there ("good" OS
for *** though and not bug-compatible with most of today's windows
exploits ;-)

Are other sims running fine for longer periods of time? It might be a
heat issue. Also, check your RAM using memtest86 for a night or
two. If the crashes happen at the exact same time, it might hint at
the cause of the problem.

Other Sims / games work fine on the system e.g. CMR2 &3 &4, F12001, GPL,
Italian Job, CFS1 &2.

I'll try Memtest86.

I was wondering if it's to do with the onboard sound in my A7N8X mobo?  It's
the NForce2 sound.  RBR wouldn't work at all with sound acceleration on
full.  System locks/bomb outs happen more frequently when sound acceleration
is higher.  The "least bad" time (ie when it survives about 10 minutes) is
with sound acceleration on none.

Silly thing, and I posted this in another thread, but I found that if I
have anything in my DVD drive other than the RBR DVD or just leaving it
empty, it'll crash on me with 1.01 installed.   It kinda looks like the
no-dvd thing actually does try to check the DVD, and if it finds
something it doesn't expect in there, it'll freak out and crash.

I had a movie in the drive when I installed 1.01, and played like that,
the thing brought windows down 3 times.   I took the DVD out and left
the drive empty, and I ran the UK and Japan rallies in sequence without
a problem.

RBR lock ups / freezes

Update - problem solved (well work around).
I tried all combinations of graphics settings, AGP apperature size, Fast
writes, AA, AF settings with no joy.
But moving theSoumd acceleration slider down to none (in DXDiag) removed the
locks / freezes / stuttering & now it's silky smooth with good fram rates.

I've also upgraded from the onboard sound to an audigy sound card but found
that again onlt in RBR I need to slide the soumd acceleration down to make
it run stably.
