Yeah sounds like it.  Both the DX 6.0 M3DII drivers have not worked for me (205
and 207).  I had to go back to 203 which is DX 5.0.  So try going back to DX 5.0
drivers for whatever V2 card u have and it should work.
Those DX 6.0 drivers are nice for everything but GPL though, too bad GPL is my
main/only concern.

The problem is b/c of glide2x.dll version 2.54 that is included in the
DX6 reference drivers.  Download the non-DX6 reference drivers, extract
the files, and copy the version 2.53 glide2x.dll into your GPL folder.

GPL used to run fine with my voodoo2 and Celeron 300A running at 450.
But after I briefly installed a nvidia riva zx card in my system, I had
problems. The game doesn't lock-up when driving, but as soon as I hit escape
to go back to the pits, I get a black screen and the hour-glass just stays
there. There are sounds so the game is still running - just no video.

I fdisked, and reinstalled GPL, and am using DirectX 6.0 and 3dfx directx 6
voodoo2 reference drivers - and still have the same problem?

Previously, when I didnt have this problem, I think I was using DirectX 6
and the voodoo2 drivers from Viewtop (the card maker). But now even this
combination gives me the same problem.

Do I need to revert to DirectX 5.0?

As has been said a million times now - use the latest V2 DX6 drivers, but
put the older glide2x.dll (v2.53) file into your GPL folder. Everything
should now work OK.
