Screen lock up′s in GPL

Since two weeks I have screen lock ups for a split second for about 4
to 6 times on each lap online and offline. I remember that it was
mentioned here that the reason could be the SB Live Value.
My system is PII 400, V3/3000, SB Live Value, 128 RAM.
The lock ups started with the installation of the V3 card, but there
was only one minor lock up after the start and then the game was running
fine for more than two month now.
Does anyone have similar problems and know how to solve it?

glide-version? system temperature? does the V3 get hot? overclocked?
lockups with other glide- or with direct-3d-games?

This is going to sound weird, but how full/fragmented is your hard drive?
If you're low on hard drive space, your hard drive could be badly
fragmented -- including your page file.  If the momentary lockups are
occurring while the hard drive is being accessed, it could be that you've
got a fragmentation or disk space problem.

Also, do you have any screen savers enabled?  Screen savers occupy precious
memory (the 3D and OpenGL screen savers can eat up a LOT of memory) which
could be preventing you from using all that 128 MB of RAM that you have,
causing more page file swapping than is necessary (and disk access is much
slower than RAM access).  Additionally, screen savers "run" in the
background when not in use, and at times they can eat up as much as 60% of
your CPU cycles (or more), depending on the complexity, etc.

These are some longshot suggestions, but I've seen both cause problems with
basic Microsoft Office apps (MS Word, Excel, etc.), so you can only imagine
how badly these things could affect something as complex as GPL.

Hope this helps.

latest drivers from 3dfx, system temp?? I guess normal, two additional

overclocking of front side bus, I have only GPL, so no experience with
other games.

Ok, it sounds like you have a Celeron 400 CPU and are using SoftFSB to
overclock your system. If that is the case, then the overclocking is the
problem. From what I understand from talking to someone that knows, although
SoftFSB successfully adjusts the front side bus by varying the PLL chip on
the motherboard, it does not do the correct dividing of the AGP/PCI
frequency. So, your V3 is running at a bus speed of 75MHz (since that is
what is needed to get a Celeron 400 to 450) instead of the rated 66MHz of
the AGP bus (I think this is correct-someone correct me if I am wrong).
Although this is not a large jump in speed, it can cause problems with some
AGP video cards. I would take a fan from an old 486 CPU and***it
directly to the heatsink of the V3. You may also want to look at one of the
more specialized cooling solutions that are available for some of the
popular video cards on the market.

Hope this helps-

run some graphics benchmark or sort of for 10 minutes and go to the
bios: there you will find the system-temperature (also refered to as
'mainboard-temperture') - if it is 45C or higher, you could have a heat
problem.

that means your FSB is 75Hz and the AGP will be at the same frequency -
could be a timing problem - try to run the system at normal speed and
see if the problem resists.
