GPL is SLOW after GPL 1.1 patch install

by John Courtn » Sat, 10 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I just installed GPL 1.1 on top of a fresh install of GPL (I tried it
on my existing copy first too).  Before GPL 1.1 I would get 35-36 FPS
when running on my own, now I am getting 25-26 tops with GPL 1.1.
Everything seems so slow at this frame rate!

My system:
AMD K6-2 333
video card: Matrix G200
3dfx card: Diamond Monster Voodoo II (latest drivers, I tried it with the
old 2.03 drivers too, same thing...)
Sound: SB 64 sound card

I can't find the gplts.html file talked about in the install, it's not in
the game directory.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
John

I've had a similar slowdown in framerate (from 35-36 to the 25-26 range),
but with a voodoo 3 3k on a fresh install.  I get the same framerate
regardless of resolution from 640x480 up to 1280x1024, so it doesn't seem to
be a video acceleration problem.  Also have an AMD (400 though).  Toggling
FF on/off by ini file makes no difference in framerate, so it doesn't seem
to be a ff issue - unless the on off toggle only changes sending of ff data
already computed to the controller.

GPL is SLOW after GPL 1.1 patch install

Wheel 1: TSW2 Formula w/ paddles - my preferred wheel.
Got a solid 36fps with this setup prior to GPL 1.1.  Now gets 25-26FPS.  No
change with FF toggle on or off (shouldn't be).

Wheel 2: Logitech Formula Force - USB
Only turned 32-34 FPS with this wheel before 1.1. Now only gets 24-25 with
FF, 25-26 without FF. Low point of 20fps when sliding after hitting a wall
with FF on.

Can anyone explain such heavy loss in framerate between GPL and GPL 1.1 - Or
was the patch intended only for those running celery 450s or better.  If so,
why not tell us that before we installed!

GPL is SLOW after GPL 1.1 patch install

by Ed Ba » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

On Sat, 10 Jul 1999 07:31:26 GMT,

I don't have the loss in framerate w/1.1. It runs about the same
with my Force RS as it did prior to the patch when I used my TSW.
I totally reinstalled GPL and then applied the patch.
I haven't tried it on 1.1 with the TSW.

My system:

PII-375 (5x75) / Diamond MX-300 /
 Voodoo3-2000 (155mhz) / 128MB.

I have the latest (non-quake) reference drivers from 3dfx.com.
and the latest FF drivers from the ACTLABS site, with split-axis.

I use the provided sample core.ini file and only changed
force feedback to 1.

I use the MX-300 gameport and always cancel all background
tasks before running, using CTL-ALT-DEL, except Explorer
and Systray.

I have a 230MB fixed length Windows swapfile.

Currently, I am just hotlapping at 1024x768 and the 36 fps is
-really- steady with all detail on at Monza, Spa, and Nurburgring.

I forgot to mention, I only have cars/track in my mirror settings.

In fact, though it may be my imagination, it seems to run just a tad
smoother.

Hi John,

I've got kind of the same problem. I've just
installed the german patch and in the
"In-Car"-View it run's _very_ jerky. If I switch
to Outside-View or the other Camera-Views its
running very smooth and better than before.

Therefore I'm sure it has nothing to do with the
force-feedback.

I have a P266, 64MB and a Voodoo I.

I had this problem with the original version of GPL. After loading the
track and leaving the pits, the game would pause for a tiny amount of
time - barely long enough to notice, but somewhat distracting. I
remember this effect most pointedly on the 'Ring. It would happen
every time I exited Suedkehre, and then again on other sections of the
track. After the first lap, however, the effect would vanish.

Back then, I ascribed this behaviour to my trusty old Voodoo1 taking
her time loading a texture or two and didn't think much about it.
Then, the effect vanished completely. I have no idea what ultimately
caused it, and what made it go away.

This quirk didn't come back with the patch. Framerates are fine, i.e.
identical to those I had before. But then, I don't have (yet) a FF
wheel.
