GPL 1.1 slow mo cause detected?

by Thorsten Ruete » Tue, 13 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

first I have to say that I have not have the time to race much
with the 1.1 patch. Nevertheless, today I recognized the
sudden appearance and disappearance of the slow motion
phenomenon. I do *not* mean a decrease in framerate but the
time in the GPL going suddenly slower.
This is even there in replays. I changed back to the old
synch method (synch_method =0) and, ...bingo the problem
wasn't there anymore.

I saw that slow mo phemomenon only in single player races.
But I have only done 1 online race with the 1.1 patch, yet.
(That one was of brilliant qualitiy).

Well, since I get the problem racing offline, I don't think that the server
(host) has any effect on the problem, since offline,  Im at the same moment
the host and the client, running on sync=0. But maybe your right..

If Papyrus would at least acknowledge the problem, like they did for the
wheel lurking in the first Nascar Racing 2 patch.

I also get this prob even with sync=0
Think this must be due to host having sync=1?

5 minutes later.....

Here it is, on the sierra forum, from Eric T. Busch:

Sometimes.  For some they are faster, for some they are slower, and
for others its buisness as usual...

No.

It's a bug.

See above.

Eric

How much more acknowledgement and honesty do you want :)

I don't visit those Sierra boards, and I haven't seen anybody from Papyrus
here say they know about the slomo problems.  You said helps about disabling
modems and sync=0, but that's not acknowledging since many of us still have
those problems after those helps.

Some people just don't like to acknowledge that their problems have been
acknowledged. :)

Well I can't quite see the use of an official statement from papy. I'm
sure they're aware of the problems, since Eric t. Busch is trying to
help as much as he can on the Apex forum and the Sierra Forum.
And considering that the patch was released on friday, just before the
weekend, it isn't quite a wonder why we didn't have much responce from
papy, is it?

Perfect..  Thanks to you, Eric and Papyrus.

I guess that it's more important to say this on the Sierra board than here
on r.a.s.  I understand why, so I guess I'll have to look there now instead
of here, or on the Spyboy chat (where many people were confused).  Im
wondering why they released the patch near the weekend.  Maybe it's better
to do so a Monday, so that problems can be solved during the week.. eh IMHO
;-)

There are afaik 3 places of interest: RAS (most importantly, here are
the real gpl freaks), sierra (not much interesting gpl topics, at
least nothing we haven't discussed allready here on RAS) and the Apex
forum which is also very interesting.
Eric gave his 'IT'S A BUG' acknowledgement on the sierra board simply
because someone asked him directly.

I've never looked at the spyboy chat btw, gonna do that now, don't
want to miss anything! :)

% >the slow motion

Only if the host is synching with himself.  This setting should have not
affect on the clients.  However, since GPL runs by itself as a
client/server this is why it may affect some folks while running
offline.
