RASCAR Daytona....

by Race15 » Mon, 07 Jul 2003 08:55:27

Well, I finally have a Saturday off and I end up thinking 4:00 is CENTRAL...not
EASTERN like it is plainly printed on the website.  I get in just in time to
get one lap in qualifying and am at the back of the pack.  Not so bad, I think.

The plan is to sit in the back, avoid the accidents and hit the pits at every
yellow, hoping that a long green run will pay off for me.   I run with
Frederickson and Ed S for a few laps and then a yellow.   A few more laps and
yellow again.  A third.  And then something weird happens.

We are coming to the start finish line and my spotter says GREEN GREEN GREEN
and i go.  Frederickson isnt moving and I have to drop low to avoid him.  BLACK
FLAG... grooooaaan...but wait.  Something isn't right.  Green lights are
showing and no one is moving.  Even as I slow, I'm still passing cars. I still
dont know what was going on.  Is this a bug I don't know about?  I slow down,
letting the cars move ahead of me and the green lights are STILL on.  I pull
the the pits while everyone else starts to race.  LAP DOWN.   Ah...for petes
sake.

Of course there is now a long green run and I'm screwed.  Ended up getting
caught up in someone elses accident, no big deal, and had to retire.  Just wish
I could have been racing for position for a while longer.

I look forward to running a few more as work permits.  Thanks guys.

If you had in-car chat turned on (and I think the site says you should), you
might have noticed we agreed to take a "slow green" (i.e. race goes green
but everyone stays at pace speed) to allow David G. Fisher, who'd
disconnected out of the lead, back on the lead lap.

What you should have done, after this mistake and getting the BF, is blow
past everybody so as to stay on the lead lap when serving the penalty
(stating bogus BF in chat).

If you'd moved low as I intended you to, you might have made it passed that
one. Do not force a lead lap car to take a certain line around you. Comply
to his/her intentions, either verbal or "car body language", instead. I
clearly lined up to pass you high, only to have you be polite and move up
"out of the way", thereby baulking me and leaving me unsighted as to what
was happening ahead. If in doubt, go low... do not block the escape route.

20 out of 21 drivers at the time realised what was going on.... sorry.

Yeah, best superspeedway race yet, I reckon.

Jan I started that run from the inside line and let everyone go by me until it
was safe to move to the high line. During the course of the race  I repeatedly
used the "28 Shamrock Pass Me Low" button and moved up the track with plenty of
time for those behind me to make the proper adjustment..  At the time of the
accident I was already in the high line and with five cars diceing back an
forth in front of me it was a little difficult to look in the mirror and
decipher your "body language".  Too many cars moving side to side to realize
that you were "clearly" going to pass me on the outside.

You should have been able to look up the track and see what was directly in
front of me and realized my full attention was not on the rear view mirror.  I
went high with the accident because he (Frederickson?) had hit the wall and I
fully expected him to washout down the track.  Certainly my misjudgement.

As far as everyone going on a slow green lap to help out DF...I must have
missed the very first part of the conversation.  I thought the discussion was
on giving a lap back.  In general.  Of couse, in general, I have been known to
be and idiot!  And certainly got what I deserved :)))

Still, thouroughly enjoyed the run.

for starters i forgot to save the replay for myself.... so im just goin on
memory

Is that a compliment... almost? ;-)

I read the chat and honestly i didnt know that was gonna happen either, but
i got the idea after  (quite) a few seconds. I thought one of the bosses was
gonna clear the lap down with the server command, not actually the old
fashioned redneck way. ;-)

Yea it was a fun race. :*D

think.

Honestly I havent raced much in a while, so with all the new faces I was
kinda nervous as to who I should be afraid of getting too close to. So I was
kinda scared of you, but now that I think about it you were pretty safe and
i had nothing to worry about.

Like you said, you me and Ed were*** back trying to avoid the messes.
Me and Ed's sponsors had a meeting and decided we should run together. I
followed him round and round but I lost my concentration in the dogleg and
scraped the wall, screwing up my aero. I tried to lead and it didnt work, so
behind him i tucked.

There was one big yellow and I had my smoke turned off from the road
courses. I used to keep all the realism settings to max but since sears I
left them off to avoid accidents. Well that doesnt work at Daytona, cause
there was a huge wreck and I didnt notice until I smacked some car. With
moderate damage it messed up my engine a little but I could still keep up
with Ed, but I couldnt pass. We pitted together until there was about 40
laps to go, when Ed decided he had to go for it. He took 2 tires and off he
went. I didnt mind since I was pretty slow, but I was mad that I hadnt
remembered to only take 2 myself, which I would have normally. My mind was
on the damage.

At the green I was able to keep up and even pass some cars, but I ended up
driving too agressively and got caught 3 wide when I wasnt expecting it, I
got in the marbles and hit the wall. There was no room and I made a mess of
the track and my car, so I couldnt keep up anymore.

But then Ed blew his engine...

Hi folks,

I very much enjoyed last night's race. Sorry again to Neil_C
for crashing into him with five or six laps to go. It was my
best RASCAR performance to date, and simply got too nervous in
this tight pack of cars. Sorry mate!

I noticed quite a bit of warping, esp. from T(im?) Pau(l)lin and
Jan... while tim was warping consistently, Jan only warped when
getting close to him, quite strange.

It was great fun drafting with Steve, DGF and Larry for endless
laps... we nearly showed'em, boys ;-)

Cheers,

uwe

Coincidence. I thought there was a connection with the number of cars in my
view for a while too, but it was just random.

Most annoying seeing as the dial-up was solid last week. Unusually high
latency for some reason too (even taking into account the dail-up).

Tim was warping consistently. I started behind him and was trying to find a
way past while still giving some space for obvious reasons. I was thankful
when he pull into the pits and was also glad that he didn't have to drop out
of the race entirely.

This was a fun race for me as I ran up front for most of the race. After the
green flag stop I overcame getting stuck at the end of the field, right
behind the pace car with the help of a timely yellow. To be involved in that
much close racing with no incidents or dents is great.

This is probably the hardest part about racing with a new crowd.  I have raced
for years under the name Wozmon, dating back to Hawaii where I carried a 10
rating.  But of course that doesnt mean a hill of beans to guys driving now
Thats why I am always EXTRA careful.  Since I have been reading the newsgroup
for a few years, I know who is who, and it was a safe bet to follow you and Ed.
Just too bad it didn't work out.  :))

Ah well, a fun experience anyways!  And yes, that was a compliment about you on
the wall.  You kept it up there nicely.  If I hadn't hit you full steam, you
might have been able to keep it there unitl traffic had passed.

I was behind you when you were sliding up the track and T-Boned you when I
went low to avoid the wreck. Sorry bout that.  I had slowed down enough that
oddly enough I didn't sustain any damage.

Larry and Ed kept me informed of my warp, so I pitted out of the top 10 to
stay out of the way and still finish the race.
I ran behind you the last few laps .... saw no reason to try to pass you for
13th position(lol)

Yeah I don't know what happened to my connection.  Really pissed me off,  I
really wanted to push to the front but felt it was more considerate to pit
and go to the back of the pack.

From the readme:

Multiplayer servers now have the option of allowing any connected user to
call a poll to allowing them to vote on certain admin commands.  Only one
poll is allowed at a time.  A 'yes' vote is automatically entered for the
person initiating a poll.  All other users can vote on the poll using chat
commands "!YES" or "!NO".  Only those users who were connected to the server
at the time the poll was initiated are allowed to vote.  At the completion
of the vote's timer any non-votes are counted as no votes, and the final
outcome is broadcast to all users.  To prevent hogging the polling system, a
user is not allowed to initiate a new poll for a short time after having
conducted a poll.  The poll is entered as a chat message "!poll pole_type
player" where player can either be the "#" symbol along with the player's
car number, or the player's name.  The chat command "!list_polls" will
return a complete list of available polls.  For example:

 !poll eject player [<comment>]
 !poll yellow [<comment>]
 !poll black player [<comment>]
 !poll clear player [<comment>]
 !poll lap+ player [<comment>]
 !poll lap- player [<comment>]
 !poll track track_name

Two new driving controls have been added to quickly vote YES or NO in
response to a poll.  Note that these hotkeys are only available while
driving in-car:

F11 - votes yes  (issues !yes chat command)
F12 - votes no   (issues !no chat command)

Oh, by the way -
Sean, when you're off the pace you really need to pick either a high or low
line.  When Dan, Jan and I caught you near the end, your 'middle of the road'
method nearly caused a 4-car pileup...
I also had two other occasions where taking avoiding actions for you put me
into the outside wall.  Please try to do better...  Thanks.

So does Eldred's have to learn all RASCAR Sierra IDs by heart or does that
work off racenumber?
