F1 2000 - Should I buy it.

by Dean William » Thu, 13 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Racers, I need your help.

Each time I go into Electronics Boutique, I see F1 2000 from EA Sports, and
each time I leave without it.  I need someone who has similar taste in sims
to let me know if I should pick up, or pass on it.  So here's me:

I am a Papyrus junkie.  I buy all Papyrus titles as soon as they hit the
shelves.  I love Nascar3 and Nascar Legends.  But as much as I love them, I
love Grand Prix Legends even better.  I am not a hot lapper with GPL, but I
can keep the car on the track (My best time is a 1:30.10 at monza, and I'm
high 1:30's at Spa, and 1:12's at WG)

I love GP500, but have not spent a ton of time behind it.  I also like SGCT
a lot.  Toca2, is a nice change for a while. I usaully get tired of it afte
a week.  Rally Championship is fun for a while, but I get tired easily of
the touchy steering.  I play Viper Racing now and then, but never really
took it seriously (but it's still fun)

I can't stand any of the Need For Speed games.  I didn't like Cart Precision
Racing.

So with that said, are there people out there that are like me and bought
and liked F1 2000?  Or should I just hang on until GP3?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I'd say yes.  Comes down to how much $30 means to you, do you really expect
GP3 to come out any time soon enough to satisfy you (I have doubts for me),
and how much you are looking for an F1 fix right now.  Actually, that comes
across with too many if's.  I think, barring framerate and some AI issues,
F12K is very enjoyable and will keep me from firing up SCGT, GP2, MGPRS2.

As a point of reference, my favorites were the original World Circuit F1GP,
ICR, ICR2, through GP2.  Occasionally the last version of N2 (was that 1999?)
and some N3 (not really a NASCAR fan). I played GPL enough to get to know the
'ring (had to for my real drive there!) and to do a sub 1:30 at Monza.  Even
managed to win a race against a full AI field at, um, novice level.   Also
SCGT quite a bit, and both F1RS and MGPRS2.  I didn't bother with any of the
NFS series until Porsche Unleashed, which is quite decent BTW.  Test drive
isn't even worth mentioning. Gran Turismo and GT2 for the PSX are excellent.

F12K might not have the staying power of ICR2, GP2, GLP, but it is a keeper.

My tastes in sims are pretty similar to yours, although I may not be
quite as enthusiastic about N3 and N Legends as you are (I like them,
though).

I really like F1 2000.  I think it's the best modern-era F1 sim
available.

I've written up some thoughts on and suggestions for F1 2000 and posted
them on my general Sim Racing Web site (which is currently undergoing
renovation).  Go to:

  http://eaglewoman.maximumspeed.com/sims/

Click on Sims (on the left), then F1, and look for F1 200 under
"Recommended".

Yah... go for it. Some problems exist, but on the whole the best of the
contemporary F1 bunch. I like it.

That's the important question.  F1 2000 is the best title at the moment, but
how much would it worth for you?  I don't think it's a quality title (even
if it's the best of the worst), but while waiting for Gp3, it could suit
your needs.

But personally, I would tell you to spend your simracing time on your other
software instead.  With all the new tracks for GPL, you'll have enough time
to waste waiting for GP3 ;)

Yep, despite some irritations, F12K is the best modern F1 sim out there, and
is a real blast!
Go for it!

F1 2000 - Should I buy it.

by Remco Moe » Fri, 14 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Why you shouldn't buy it:

Bad AI out of the box.
No telemetry.
Bad replay system.
Difficult to manage setup files.
Bad default setups.
No multiplayer practice.
Hard to configure on some systems.
Bad Force Feedback.
Sound is to digital. (Although some people
  seem to like it)

Why you should buy it:

All the tracks of the 2000 season.
The car handles like you would expect of a F1 car.
A lot of things are adjustable, so you can expect better
cars (there are already!), better AI (people already did!),
  graphics/sounds enhancements(yup, done!), and there
  is many more to expect.
Stable online multiplay. (And I suspect a certain lady will improve
things, no, I will not mention any names <g>)
It's the best modern F1 game.
Better setups will come available.

_My_ conclusion, if you're like me who is surfing the web
to find sim addons, and who isn't afraid to modify stuff, and
to try new things out, then F1-2000 is for you.

However, if you expect a polished game right out of the box,
forget F1-2000.

Since it's Electronics Boutique, give it a try.  You will have 10 days
to run it through its paces and if it doesn't suit your needs you can
return it no questions asked (well they may ask, but any answer you give
is okay).

For my tastes, F12000 didn't make the cut, but for many others, they are
having a blast.  Since you enjoy SGGT, F12000 should seem very
similar.  However, I feel that F12000 suffers from many of the same
problems Cart Precision Racing had, so on that count, you may find
F12000 wanting.  But you will never know until you try it yourself.

Nope. Don't you wonder why there's still no demo available? What you
read here does not reflect reality in any way as most people can't and
don't want to admit that they wasted money believing the usual EA
hype. And interestingly, apart from this newsgroup the negative
feedback on this title outweighs the positives by far.
I'd say, if you're into F1 forget it, it does not resemble the real
thing - neither as far as tracks design, regulations or real life
performances are concerned. It has a neat driving model but if you
just want that you're better off with GPL.
Also there are severe limitations due to bad or unoptimized graphics
engine. Considering that you have to drastically cut down the
visibility options to get a decent framerate with a full field (and
who would want to play an F1 sim with just 10 or so cars?) makes this
whole thing obsolete from the start. At this point you could also play
GP2, doesn't look much worse, has more depth, more options etc. Or -
if a clear sight and fast graphics mean a lot for you there's always
MGPRS, maybe not the most accurate in the physics department but a
much more serious and complete F1 'sim' attempt than this EA nonsense.

I have to be honest, I'm none too impressed with F1 2000. The reasons have
been stated in many other threads, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite as
bad as it is. EA, for all their faults (and lord knows they've got a few)
usually make decent eye-candy, arcade games, but this, while certainly
keeping the arcade feel, has those (imho) horribly dated SCGT-style
graphics.
Add to that, the fact that I can run against 6 AI, tops, and I'm left with a
hotlap game, and I'm no hotlapper.
Sorry, but I file this one in the "never-to-be-played" bin. Good luck to
those who persevere with it, though!

It's only $29.00 for chrissakes.  That amount of money is hardly enough to
create such cognitive dissonance.  You're beginning to sound like David
Fischer.  Save the pop psychology for something else.
