once  again a NFS game that doent work with the Banshee.  I was so e***d,
then I found out that they didnt learn from their misteaks and fix the
compatibility problem.  So if you have a banshee forget it.

The demo is a single 2-lap race on the Route Adonf track, against three
other cars.  There is no front-end to the demo, only controller, graphics
and HUD configuration from the pause menu.
(Note: you must hit ESC to bring up the pause menu in order to configure
your controller!)  You can view a reply of the race.
I love the new damage meters which the PSX version lacked, as well as the
deformable bodies.  Graphics are decent on my 400MHz K6-III, 64MB RAM with a
32MB Rage Fury.  All graphics are options were set to maximum.  The frame
rate was very good, so it seems this problem has been solved from the PSX
version.
One thing I was interested in was the driving model.  NFS4 PSX is more of a
sim than previous efforts, and I felt the driving model in that game was
very good, although the two Ferrari's weren't quite right.  I was
disappointed with NFS3 PC; it was like driving a wet sponge.  Well, the
model in the demo seems to be OK, but I still think I need to do some more
adjusting to the wheel.
One thing that has always bugged me about the NFS series on the PC are the
"vacuum walls".  This phenomenon occurs in external views.  If you get too
close to a wall, it will suck you in, and the camera view will be shifted
slightly.  How annoying.  The PSX versions have never done this.
I just hope the rest of the game is as good as the PSX version.  (I still
think NFS3 on the PSX is better than the PC version)
I wondering which of the old tracks are gonna be included?  I've read that
Empire City is one.  I'd also like to see the first four from NFS3, the
Canada and Germany track from 2 and Autumn Woods from 1.

BTW, I could only manage 1.8kb/sec from the avault site, so it took quite
awhile to download.  I think Gamecenter.com has it as well.

Yep, I only got around 6k/sec with a cable modem, and that is dog slow. The
normally lightning fast Gamespot servers weren't much better at around 10k.
Yesterday was a huge day for demos, so there was probably a lot of traffic.

I agree. It's still an arcade game of course, but the driving model is
WAY better than NFS3.

I'm glad they've finally added car damage to the game. Bouncing off after a
head-on collision just seems a little silly to me. I wanna go thru the
windshield!

Having taken another go at the demo, I was surprised to find myself racing
at night!  The lighting is amazing, especially near the castle area.  The
full moon lit the surrounding area just enough for me to navigate since I
had broken both of my headlights in collisions!  (As hard as I tried, I
couldn't break BOTH of them in the PSX version)
The dash is fully luminated, and is even visible from the external view.  I
forgot to mention in my previous post that the interior of the car is fully
modeled.  Very cool.  I also thought the fireworks over the town were a nice
touch.
Now, if I could just get the steering set up properly; I still can't control
the damned car!  Your controller settings aren't saved upon exit, either.

Try playing around with the dll's.  I used a lot of different combinations and
am not sure which one finally worked, but I think if you make a copy of d3da.dll
and rename it voodoo2a.dll it should work.

WAY better? Unfortunately not IMHO. Judging by the demo NFS still doesn't
have the feel of driving. You can drive almost the whole course flat out
without braking and the car won't spin even if you stab the throttle when
deliberately going slow in the middle of a bend. No realistic powerslides
either. And having read many articles about how the 911 Turbo is a real
killer to drive, I can't say that about it's nfs:hs brother. If the driving
feel would be even as good as TOCA2 I would be delighted, now it just
doesn't seem to have any challenge. I'm disappointed EA didn't do anything(I
can't see any real difference in HS) to improve the weakest point of NFS3.
Arcade it maybe, but even an option for a more realistic  driving style
would be the most welcome improvement to NFS-series. I'll get 1000 times
more kicks driving my mom's 1.1 litre Peugeot 205 in real life than blasting
a 911 Turbo on the roads of High Stakes demo. And even the Pug's engine
noise is better...
All that said, I'll probably go out and buy HS the moment I see it for sale.
But that's just because there aren't any real rivals for it:( Before seeing
the whole game, I'd say HS is only NFS3 with career play and slightly
improved graphics. I sure hope I'm wrong..

I disagree here, but I've only played the full version. The courses I've
played (dunno what's in the demo) absolutely require braking or you go
right into a barrier. Now on your second point, I don't recall this
happening, you may be right there.

No realistic powerslides

You're entitled to your opinion. I think the graphics are more than
slightly improved. Have you played Hot Pursuit in the rain at night? Did
you notice the damage model that wasn't in NFS3?  Okay, I'm sounding like
a mouthpiece for EA now, but I love this game. Sorry.

You're right, the graphics are better(fog & stuff) and the damage is a clear
improvement. Maybe I was a bit too *** the game,  but as there was some
gossip that HS should have improved driving physics and I was waiting too
much... I only have the demo(2 laps with 911 turbo against 1 911 and 2
Maranellos, route adonf), so I don't know how much better the whole game is
going to be, but still it isn't as big leap forward as it was with NFS2 to
NFS3. NFS series is great and despite what I said about driving I do find
the game to be otherwise high quality. It's just that I'm missing that
feeling which comes after you've had merely kept the car under your control
and finished the course in a new recordtime. Now it doesn't feel the car
must be pushed with pinpoint accuracy through the bends just to save a
fraction of a second and there is no need for 'careful' driving, which I
think is what is needed with supercars like Ferrari Maranello. That's what
makes me play a cargame over and over again and that's what I'm looking
forward on NFS5:-) (I hope you're listening at EA:-))

all the tracks from NFS3 are included, but you have to unlock them all it
seems. The rest of them are new(there are also three race track course that
have to be unlocked as well.)

Personally, I think they should give a rebate to people who own NFS3
already only because HS seems to be a spruced up version of 3.

take care.
Stephan.
