NFS High Stakes Blue Screen Crashes - EVERY TIME on first lap

by Sinj » Fri, 18 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I tried to play the new NFS for about 2 hours last night using every
possible configuration combination and I could NEVER get more than
60-90 seconds into the first lap before I would be dumped out to a
blue screen FATAL EXCEPTION error with some funky hex code address.

Anybody else having this problem.  The game is going back tomorrow if
I can't get it working by then.

System Stats:

P3-500
384mb RAM
Plextor 40x SCSI CD
Viper 770 Ultra AGP
SonicVortex2 A3D Sound card
Microsoft Sidewinder FF Wheel

Windows 98

I've tried Typical and Full installs.  I just defragged and am trying
a fresh install but have little hope that a 2% fragmented drive was
causing this problem.

Also disabled everything in my Task Manager except Explorer and
SysTray and no luck.

HELP!

Have you scanned your HD for viruses recently?  I had very
similar problems with NFS3 and the NFSHS demo.  It turned out my
entire drive was riddled with the W95.CIH (aka Chernobyl) virus.
After disinfection, everything ran properly.

No viruses - run an updated version of NAV 5.0
In fact I called EA and they blamed NAV until I disabled it and still got the
same crashes.  Turns out it was the A3D card and some bogus drivers.

Apparently putting the OLD drivers back on fixes things.  So much for keeping
"current" with new drivers.
