NFS High Stakes Demo Comments+No Split Axis?

Has anyone been able to get the pedals to work on a separate axis?
When I set them up on my Logitech FF wheel, it detects both the gas
and brake as an "up" arrow.
I also set the paddles for shifting, it accepts them, then when I play
the game they control the views.

The demo is stunning. It may be an arcade game, but the graphics and
sound are really nice. Fireworks at night, hot air balloons in the
day, bird sounds when you go through the forest.
I was also pleasantly surprised when I landed my 911 upside down on
the side of the road... I was put back on the track with the passenger
side roof smashed flat! Wish EOA could have got the permission to do
that with SCGT.

I've only played it a few times, and the controls seem real twitchy to
me. I'll have to fiddle around with dead-zones, etc.
I really hope split axis is supported in the release, if not the demo.

In the beta setting controls is a but wieird - when you assign a
button to certain functions (shifting, change view, handbrake, etc.)
it leaves that function "undefined", and the "Done" menu button that
saves changes is grayed out. Assign all those functions (to anything,
even a keyboard key) and press Done when it is available. Fooled me
for a while too.

Some of the cars are better than  others. I don't really like the
Porsche that much (though that may change when I earn enough money to
upgrade it). The Corvette is quite nice.

One interesting thing is playing the old NFS3 tracks in NFS4. It's a
good way to test how the driving model has changed. It's still
arcadish of course, but definitely easier to control than NFS3 was on
the same tracks. Now I quite like Aquatica and other treacks I didn't
play at all in NFS3.

I have had no problems assigning gas/brake functions to separate axis'.  If
you're using the Logitech 3.20 beta software, sometime the Wingman icon
doesn't appear in the system tray, and the game won't recognize the split
axis.  This has happened to me in SCGT.  This is sometimes caused by
plugging in the  wheel while the PC is running.  You'll have to quit NFS4,
or swap windows, and go to the start menu and open the Wingman profiler.
This should put the icon in the tray.  If not, open up the game controllers
panel.
If you click on the chosen assignment, it will clear, pull the lever for
shifting at that time.  It's a shame that we have to configure the
controller, graphics, etc. every time we play!
BTW, I found that reducing the steering range to a reading of 30% works best
with the LWFF.  It's still nowhere near as good as the PSX version, but
it'll do.

I have a MS-Sidewinder FF wheel set for split axis, and had the same
problem.  When I first drove the game, letting off the gas was just like
hitting the brakes (spun out several times because of it!).  When I clicked
on the brake option of the controller setup screen and pressed to brake to
define it, it showed on the screen as an up arrow.  I did it again, just in
case, but no change.  But when I went back to the track, the car drove
normally.  So maybe it correctly detects the pedal, even if it displays it
improperly.  I think I also did the gas pedal also, just in case as well...

Hope this helps...
Robert

Since I d/l the 3.20 final version software, my Wingman icon appears in the
system tray, even though the wheel isn't plugged in.  So far, so good.
