I'm currently using a MS Gamepad (yes, that's right, a gamepad) to play GPL.
The controls are digital (meaning I either get full throtle or no throtle or
full left/right or dead centre) but i still enjoy GPL. I use to own a wheel
and I can't wait till I buy a new one. GPL will be awesome.
So to answer your question, I guess it comes down to personal preference. If
you are really into sims, you should definitely get a wheel, and a good one too
.

"The guys who developed the game at Papyrus are ***ed to a
joystick(for fast steering response) and foot pedals ... and the have
the lap records to prove it works."
Personal preference, but I find a wheel much more immersive also.

I am not sure that a wheel will actually make it any easier. The real
hotlappers (and most of the Papyrus folks) like to race with joystick
and pedals. Personally I think this detracts from the immersion of the
simulation (besides a joystick may be an unfair advantage over a wheel).
Don't know the release date yet, but Thrustmaster has NASCAR Pro Digital
in the pipeline (USB or DirectConnect). In the mean time you may want
to pick up a Thrustmaster GP1 wheel real cheap to tide you over until
it's released.

Here's some of his better lap times:
Monaco: 1:30.12 (Ferrari)
Monza: 1:29.71 (Ferrari)
Mosport: 1:27.19 (Ferrari)
Nurburgring: 9:21.63 (Ferrari)
Rouen: 2:00.32 (Ferrari)
Silverstone: 1:29.71 (Lotus)
Spa: 3:21.49 (Ferrari)
Watkins Glen: 1:06.61 (Ferrari)
Zandvoort: 1:26.64 (Ferrari)
And all these times WITHOUT a WHEEL.
Faster than I am (got a T2).. so I think that settles it. Bottom line to
getting fast times.. find a good setup THAT WORKS FOR YOU, and PRACTICE,
PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

But combine a joystick and pedals, well..that's a whole new ball game.
I would go so far as to say this combo is "cheating". You can apply
steering input much faster than with a wheel, going opposite lock to
opposite lock almost instantly.

You're wrong, but I guess there's no point in saying so.
Cheers!
