GPL with joystick?

GPL with joystick?

I do not own a wheel and have been using my CH fighterstick/pro pedals with
steering set fully to non-linear. How much easier would a wheel make it? I
really do not want to spend more for controllers until the USB issue is
settled. Would you consider GPL unplayable with a joystick?

The only disadvantage to the joystick is the loss of a sense of realism.
I run GPL at home with a Nascar Pro wheel/pedal unit, and at work with a
GP1/CH pedals setup. I've also run with a Logitech stick/CH pedal combo,
and I'm just as fast with the stick as I am with the wheel, but I enjoy
the sim more when I drive with the wheel.

GPL with joystick?

Hi David,

I'm currently using a MS Gamepad (yes, that's right, a gamepad) to play GPL.
The controls are digital (meaning I either get full throtle or no throtle or
full left/right or dead centre) but i still enjoy GPL.  I use to own a wheel
and I can't wait till I buy a new one.  GPL will be awesome.

So to answer your question, I guess it comes down to personal preference.  If
you are really into sims, you should definitely get a wheel, and a good one too
.

According to the Strategy Guide written by Steve Smith, some of development
team at Papyrus , the hot lappers, drive with a joystick and pedal setup.
Personally, I much prefer the feel and realism of a wheel and pedals.

From "Four Wheel Drift":

"The guys who developed the game at Papyrus are ***ed to a
joystick(for fast steering response) and foot pedals ... and the have
the lap records to prove it works."

Personal preference, but I find a wheel much more immersive also.

That would explain why you get 1:50's at the Glen.  Get a wheel, get
it now... :)

I am not sure that a wheel will actually make it any easier.  The real
hotlappers (and most of the Papyrus folks) like to race with joystick
and pedals.  Personally I think this detracts from the immersion of the
simulation (besides a joystick may be an unfair advantage over a wheel).

Don't know the release date yet, but Thrustmaster has NASCAR Pro Digital
in the pipeline (USB or DirectConnect).  In the mean time you may want
to pick up a Thrustmaster GP1 wheel real cheap to tide you over until
it's released.

Perhaps that's true for you, but some of the fastest drivers at Papyrus
would definitely disagree.

GPL with joystick?

I don't know.. a friend sent me his best laps, exported directly out of GPL
(I've played him and can confirm he is fast, btw). He uses a joystick
(actually, two of them.. one for throttle, the other steering).. and his lap
times are BLAZING FAST!

Here's some of his better lap times:
Monaco: 1:30.12 (Ferrari)
Monza: 1:29.71 (Ferrari)
Mosport: 1:27.19 (Ferrari)
Nurburgring: 9:21.63 (Ferrari)
Rouen: 2:00.32 (Ferrari)
Silverstone: 1:29.71 (Lotus)
Spa: 3:21.49 (Ferrari)
Watkins Glen: 1:06.61 (Ferrari)
Zandvoort: 1:26.64 (Ferrari)

And all these times WITHOUT a WHEEL.

Faster than I am (got a T2).. so I think that settles it. Bottom line to
getting fast times.. find a good setup THAT WORKS FOR YOU, and PRACTICE,
PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

you can tell in some of the replays that the hotfoot is using a joystick -
Monaco for instance.

If you're talking 100% joystick..I agree..I certainly can't drive GPL
with a stick.  My TSW was down for a couple of days (due to a refit,
not a repair), and I ran some races with a joystick...what a nightmare.
But some people can do it, and quite well.

But combine a joystick and pedals, well..that's a whole new ball game.
I would go so far as to say this combo is "cheating".  You can apply
steering input much faster than with a wheel, going opposite lock to
opposite lock almost instantly.

Two joysticks - I tried that once for about 5 mins, then decided it
was only for piano players who can do different things with both hands
at the same time. :) The only thing I ever drove that had two "sticks"
to steer it was the M113 APC. But that was easy since you had to do
the *same* thing with both hands.
