F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by Thom j » Sat, 29 Dec 2001 08:07:54

Hello All RAS'ers,
Well I finally got the EA F1 2001. I know you'all have probably
hashed & re-hashed this all before but I haven't been online for
months! {cuz I've been doin' my music thang}
So I installed it just like the 'manual stated' & everything seems
fine {AFAIK?} but in trying to set up my Ferrari FF wheel [A]
it doesnt read my "Right Steer" and [B] it seems like I have no
FF?... God only knows what I have missed in the past months
with all the 'dos & donts' + patches for F1 2001 but if anyone
can direct me to a site or help with the above, it's appreciated!
Tia.. Thom_j.
P.S. Look Out Kiddiez I'm Baaaaaack :)
P.S.S. btw its the Guillemot aka Thrustmaster FF Ferrari Race
Wheel I have..

Guess who's going to try and help you?

Me. You're best friend.

What drivers are you using for your wheel? Do you have Thrustmapper
installed? If you do, uninstall it.

You may have to uninstall your wheel drivers completely. Make sure you get
everything.

I ahd the 2.3.6 drivers installed with 0 problems in F12001 until I
installed the EA patch.. My ff was ***with the 2.3.6 drivers so I had to
do the above, and then go back to the 2.1.6 drivers. FF then was great, but
I had no split axis. Iain Mackenzie went through the same thing as me, but
then he upgraded to the 2.3.6 (latest) drivers and everything was fine. I
did the same and also have no problems now.

The key seems to be to get rid of any traces of your current drivers, and
then re-install the 2.3.6. Or, install the 2.1.6 and then upgrade to the
2.3.6. Make sure you don't install the Thrustmapper utility.

BTW, I'd recommend intalling the 2.1.6 drivers and then upgrading to the
2.3.6 if you are using XP because if something goes wrong, you can always
just click a button and easily revert back to the 2.1.6. You won't have
split axis in F12001, but you will have excellent ff.

Drivers are here. http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Forget that link. Don't know why it takes you to the Prophet drivers. Go

I think it may actually be a "Christmas miracle".

It ran, but only in 640 x 480. The graphics also did some strange skipping
on occasion.

F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by Thom j » Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:14:38

First thank you for the info David G Fisher :)
Now I think I did everything you stated below but maybe I should add
a bit of info. I did un-install "2.3.6" and I think I got everything out but
maybe not? as I just click it out of Control Panel, then go to run to use
the cleanW.exe to do the un-install.
Then I reboot so it looks for the TM Ferrari wheel again but this time
I use the chkdsk.exe for 2.1.6 and Wah'Lah! So all was fine after that
but still no FF. Now don't forget this is a new install of F1 2001 right
out of box!
Also I must add that I do use Quickjoy to hop from my Guillemot ff
Joystick and back to my TM aka Guillemot FF wheel!! Plus It never
seems to conflict' each other at all & I have just about every sim still
on my hardrive back to ICR2. I run "Three" 30gig Maxtor HDS so I
have plenty of room.
One item I want to mention when I always used 2.3.6. when I am in
Control Panel\*** Option\Controllers\Properties: The X-axis in
Steering Axis will always center to the far right! So, when my actual
Ferrari wheel was Dead Center straight the "Red" would be gone &
the slider mark is all the way to the right! Am I making this clear?
Now when I put back in the 2.1.6 drivers in my wheel goes back to
Center' in the Control Panel\*** Option\Controllers\Properties
& all the axis configure fine in the applet. Odd...eh?
So now it is steering fine in F1 2001 {but it seems real twichy with
the steering wheel assist off!} but still no FF & I guess I'm so use
to FF that when it isnt there it feels terrible!
I have my Default Spring, In Gain Setting in the Ferrari properties
applet via the Control Panel Etc. Etc. {felt in non-force feedback
enabled games} set to 75% so I have some control centering my
wheel at the topdead center point when I steer in F1 2001. It still
is really squirrel'ie tho'...
Well this is as far as I have gone & I have not put back the 2.3.6
drivers yet until I am sure I am getting 'everything' out Correctly!
I probably went way to far on the above but I wanted to explain
as much as I could..
Regards Thom_j.
P.S. Specs:  CPU P3-1ghz, Mobo Abit SA6R, Sound SbLive,
RAM 512 PC133, Video GF2GTS Pro 64meg, Game Control
TM FF Ferrari Wheel & Guillemot FF joystick, OS Win98SE
P.S.S. I dont know what Thrustmapper is so I can't comment
on this & I run all my game controllers through my USB ports.

Okay I'm going to ask the obvious "are you sure it's plugged in" type of
question: did you get the "development update" from
http://www.easportsf1.com ?  Because without that you aren't going to
get any FF no matter what you do!  Plus it fixes some driver issues as
well.

Ah, sh*t. I thought you already had the patch installed. :-)

You probably would have had to go through everything I mentioned in my other
post anyway.

F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by David G Fishe » Sat, 29 Dec 2001 13:59:56

So you have both the 2.1.6 drivers and the EA patch (it's the patch I
referred to in my first post and contains the ff and driver updates) now
installed?

If so, you'll probably have good ff, but you won't be able to have split
axis. Make sure you turn off the centering spring. If the steering is too
sensitive, set the x axis sensitivity to about 20% and your speed
sensitivity to 65% or higher to start with. Throttle axis sensitivity set to
80%.

For the Ferrari wheel, you need to have ff strength set to full and +100.

If you have good ff (should be obvious) and no split axis with the 2.1.6,
then you should be ok now to go up to the 2.3.6 drivers which will give you
split axis ability.

"Oooo" Ok! See, as stated I'm so out of touch I didnt know any
of this! So I *can* go back to my 2.3.6 right? Also refer to how
weird my X-Axis is in the 2.3.6. applet window in control panel!
It never hurt any of my other Sims but I thought I better put it in
so you would know what I see when I am setting it up..
Again I just got F1 2001 today! Btw: what are the hotlaps times
for Hock? Just curious.. Tia.. Thom_j.

F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by David G Fishe » Sat, 29 Dec 2001 14:15:38

Yes, as long as the ff is ok with the 2.1.6 drivers then you just upgrade
using the 2.3.6 drivers here.
http://uk.guillemot.com/brand/support/find_drv.php

Just make sure you don't install Thrustmapper (I don't think it's included
with this download).

I don't have any clue as to what causes the wheel to appear off center in
control panel. Maybe it won't be that way after a new install of the 2.3.6
drivers.

Get Ian Bell's post patch setups including Hockenheim (all of them are
excellent) here http://www.simbin.com/f12001setups.htm

I think 1:37 is a fast time.

F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by Haqsa » Sun, 30 Dec 2001 03:23:12

Yes you definitely need the patch.  It is also a good idea to delete
your old player and create a new one after patching, to make sure all
the settings are correct.  You will then find a force feedback icon in
the controllers menu somewhere - I think it looks like a vibrating
joystick IIRC.  Click on that to go into the FF settings.  I think DGF
already gave you some recommended settings to start with.  Also, and
this is largely a subjective thing, I prefer to set Speed Sensitivity
(in the main controller menu) to 10%, and X Axis Sensitivity (in the
advanced controller menu, which I think is a joystick icon with the
number 1 next to it) to about 20%.  This seems to me to be the best
compromise between controllability and linearity.  YMMV.  Good luck,
Thom!

F1 2001 FF Thrustmaster Ferrari Help!

by Thom j » Sun, 30 Dec 2001 04:43:09

Thanx A Heap On More Input Haqsau..
I did update the patch but still no FF. Now in going back to the 2.1.6.
drivers for the Ferrari wheel. I guess it is 2.1.6.? as after I took all out
of the 'control panel\*** options' Then went to run to cleanW.exe
& rebooted so my Win98SE "Window Wizard" {should be Window
DumAzz} would try to locate the new hardware ( I use browse to set
it up as needs the chkdsk.exe, if it doesnt then I go to the source and
use setup, & it works here too.) but when I go to systems\properties
\device manager\sound video * game controllers\Thrustmaster force
feedback racing wheel [usb]\drivers tab-, To look at the drivers date
doesnt match {as its 5-10-2000} the 2.1.6 dates & then I go into the
Drivers Files Details: & it says Provider: Microsoft Corp & then the
'File Version: 4.08.00.0400' this doesnt have anything to do with the
TM drivers does it? Where do I find the version I am using now?
Also I see your Xaxis settings are a tad different then DGF's, Since
I am the type that uses a low wheel lock in GPL like usually 10:1 or
even sometimes down to 8:1 and 12:1 in Nascar 4, how can I get a
smooth setting for driving on the track but a nice tight lock like the
other sims I use low locks since F1 2001 does not use Steer Lock
or does it?
Finally I didn't take my driver name out either! Do you think since
I really just started yesterday I should start all over again from the
beginning? but I did see something about "to do or not to do" on
uninstalling when you have the patch installed already but I forget
where? I want to set F1 2001' in a proper manner but I dont want
to make un'needed extra work for myself at this point!
Any Ideas, Suggestions, Comments, etc..?
All help is appreciated!! Tia.. Cordially Thom_j.

YMMV.  Good luck,
| Thom!
