N4 stutters(again)

Yes, I know this was discussed before, and I'll do a more detailed search when
I get home from work. :-)
I tried running some races online last night.  The 3 tracks were Texas,
Daytona, and Richmond.  My FPS kept 'jumping' between 37 and about 41.  It made
it a bit difficult to drive smoothly.  The thing that puzzles me is I thought I
had the problem FIXED.  I had stuttering before, but after I added RAM it went
away.  I haven't run N4 online in a while, so I don't see how something could
have gotten CHANGED...
Athlon 1.2, 384MB, V5, win98se.  I had disabled the anti-aliasing when it was
suggested before, and it helped, along with RAM.  Any quick fix to look for?

Eldred, I didn't see any previous posts you had on this, so sorry if I'm
repeating things:

-background programs shut down?
-virus protection shut down?
-virtual memory settings?

1. Wait a week or two.
2. Go to Best Buy.
3. Buy a GeForce 4 Ti4600.
4. Enjoy your 150 frames per second.

Nice thought, but not possible.  No money. :(

No problem...<g>

yes.

yes.

Don't recall what they are(I'm at work now).  Can't see why whatever it's set
at would work with every other program just fine, but not N4...<g>
I did run a 50 lap race at Martinsville against the AI.  It ran fine until
about 7 or so laps to go.  I got in a wreck with someone, and then the fps
stuttered for the rest of the race.  Looking at the race replay, it was smooth.
Exit the race, start a new session.  Still stuttering.  Exit and start a new
session again - it was smooth again.
WTF?

V-memorie is very important. I had (all of a sudden) big stuttering
problems in GPL and N2002 too, exactly as you describe.
A couple of days a post about v-mem was posted here and that solved my
problem at once.
Go to start->configuratiescherm (oh wait, you are probably not using
the Dutch windows..) start->control panel, system, and under the tab
performance you can select virtual memory.
I have 256mb of ram and I set the vmem to a minimum of 1024mb and a
max of 1024mb.
Reset the machine and see if it works..

The $400 fix eh. Do you swat flies with a baseball bat?

It is odd how the stuttering came outta nowhere and didn't do it before.

Eldred, Have you set your MinFile Cache in system.ini? This took the
stuttering away on my WinMe system with a Radeon card. Here's the entry that
I use.

In C:\Windows\system.ini

[vcache]
MinFileCache=51200
MaxFileCache=51200

Here's some MS knowledge base reading on the subject, not specific to frame
stutter but,

Just a thought Eldred, you said that a recent slow down occured after a
wreck at Martinsville. Might that V5 be struggling with the added work it
has to do in drawing banged up cars. All those extra jagged textures may be
throwing it a curve whereas it does ok with the slick, smooth 'unwrecked'
car textures? Just throwing that out there, surely drawing the different
examples of torn up skins has to affect performance somehow...

if you have 256mb of memory how do you set the vmem to 1024mb.

so you can set more virtual memory than you have in the computer is that
right

Yup, its called 'Windows', lol.

Biz

Thats why its called virtual memory.  Virtual memory is the amount of hard drive space that windows
can use to emulate physical memory, its not the same as the amount of physical memory.  Looks like
you might have gotten the 2 confused.
