N4->New GEForce2 GTS 64MB with PIII 600, LOTS of flicker and stuttering

by Tim and Carme » Fri, 16 Feb 2001 08:37:46

HELP
Just forked out $269 to replace my VooDoo3 with the recommended GEForce2
GTS, and the result is unusable.  I get lots of flicker, and stuttering.
Frame rate is awesome otherwise.

I've tried D3d, Opengl, 32bit color, 16bit color, all at 800x600.  This
should just work beautiful  What gives?

Anybody have any ideas?

Take a look at the nVidia newsgroups. This flickering issue is a bigger
problem than some are making out. You fork out heaps-o-cash for the latest
and greatest graphics card and it flickers. Is it good enough ? I don't
think so.

Try disabling vsynch ( vertical synch) in both d3d and OpenGL in your
advance settings for that card.

I was having the same flickering problem. I disabled the vsync for OpenGL
and that solved it. Unfortunately, I now get a series of one- to two-
second pauses at the beginning of a race, as if N4 was still loading
textures or whatnot. It goes away after 20 seconds or so, and it doesn't
really come back again unless I switch tracks, but it's pretty annoying
while it lasts.

What I'd really like to do it is disable vsync for Direct3D, but I can't
find such an option in all the various Display and nVidia settings. Do I
need to use a special separate utility to disable D3D vsync?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

BTW, other than this problem with N4, I can't recall any other problems
with my GeForce2 card. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Jim,

I can disable vsynch in d3d - I am using the official det3 drivers ( 6.5).
It's under d3d in the Nvidia advanced settings, then click on "more direct
3d"
You will see it there along with an anti-aliasing tab.
Btw, I get the same annoying pauses in OpenGL, I don't get them in d3d. I
still prefer opengl though for the performance boost. Maybe DX9 will get us
the same performance in d3d :)

I was thinking about buying a Geforce 2 card to replace my Voodoo 3 3000,
simply for the hopeful performance boost for Nascar 4.... I've been looking
around at prices at www.pricewatch.com.... What's the difference between the
Geforce 2 GTS and the Geforce 2 MX? I know nothing about Nvidia cards, but I
assume the GTS is better and THE one to get for N4, simply because it's
almost twice as expensive as the MX..... Feel free to straighten out my
info, though....

There are so many "GeForce" cards it is very confusing.
The older cards are just plain "GeForce", the newer ones are "GeForce2".
There are some really good deals out there on the older pre-2 cards, but I think
the extra performance of the "2" is worth the extra money.
The best of the best is the "Ultra"
Next in line is the "GTS Pro"
Next is the "GTS"
Next is the "256"
Finally the "MX" which is pretty close in performance to the 256, but
significantly below the GTS.
Then, to add further diversity, there are cards with SDR memory, and cards with
DDR memory.  The DDR memory can literally move data twice as fast, but costs a
lot more too.  And of course, there are 32MB versions and 64MB versions.  Plus
some have TV out and some don't, etc., etc., etc.

IMPORTANT: The difference between the low end cards and the high end cards shows
up more at higher resolutions.

There may be very little difference in performance at 640X480 between a $95 card
and a $400 card.  But the higher you go in resolution, the bigger the difference
until at some point the high end card might produce more than twice the FPS of
the low end card.

It is tempting to want a 64MB Ultra because it is the best of the best.
However, at normal N4 display resolutions, I'm pretty sure the small increase in
frame rate is no where near worth the huge increase in price.

In my humble opinion (which believe me, is not worth much) the best compromise
between cost and performance lies with a 32MB GeForce2 GTS (I believe all of
them have DDR memory).  HOWEVER, if cost is the major concern, then the GeForce
2 MX is the ticket.

Good place to buy video cards?  Try:   www.sg3d.com

There is a TON of information about GeForce cards on the various hardware
sites.  Check out www.sharkeyextreme.com ,  www.anandtech.com ,
www.tomshardware.com , etc.  Take a few hours and study up for yourself.  Good
luck!

You know, I just want to say that buying the really high end (abovew $250)
Nvidia cards is a huge waste of money. Yes, they are very very fast, but
there are just so many problems with geforce cards that lots of people are
just not paying attention to. There just seem to be lots of quality issues
with these things, and for someone to pay hundreds of dollars for these
things is really just stupid. I have a Geforce 2 GTS, and I like it, but the
Ultras are rediculous.  There are problems with regular 2D bandwidth which
leads to fuzzy text, the flickering people are talking about, and my card
also seems to have a problem with the memory, where some textures have grey
dots flashing all over them. It would be a pain in the ass for me to send
the card back to leadtek, since they admit they probably wont have one back
to me for a good chunk of time. I just think that Nvidia gets a bit too much
praise for these cards.

I've heard of fuzzy text in menus.  This has been caused by the FSAA.

Turning Vsync off should cure this.

Haven't got a clue on this one.  Drivers?  Driver settings?  Or bad
card?  I'm using 6.50's on my GF2 GTS with no problems.

Try different drivers 6.47 or 6.49 Det.

Hmmm, I know the tab your talking about (I'm looking at it right now),
but the only choices I get are Texel Alignment and Hardware Antialiasing.
I must be using a different set off drivers (or at least the control
panel version). I'm using version 6.5 BTW, which I believe is the latest
reference version.

Oh well, I understand that there are several third party utilities, such
as NVMAx, that provide all sorts of access to advanced settings. Perhaps
I'll try one of those.

Thanks for the response.

Thanks, Coolbits and disabling vsync did the trick. No more flashing in
D3D now, although I still get the stutters upon loading a track for the
first time. No big deal.
