Wow! Thank you so much, Tony, for such a very well written reply. It's not
often that someone can ask a question and get such a wonderfully detailed
response as this. Thanks again for all the info and tips and links.

Indeed, after reading the article, and some more reading on the
mentioned sites, I bought the Asus 7700 GFII GTS Deluxe card.
To my surprise it contained 3D glasses. I thought it would be a
gimmick, but it even works! I tried the demo from 3D Max 2000 and I
was amazed, the 3D effect looks fantastic.
It works great with N4 too, allthough I have to adjust the effects a
little bit, it now looks as if the wheel is 10 meters in front of the
dashboard :)
The card costed me $288 USD by the way.
Thanks again Tony.

PS Warning: Don't wear the 3D glasses when other people are around.
Together with a wheel in your hands and headphones on, you'll look a
little bit nerdy.. :)

Here are two things that might help:
Try setting fast write for AGP in your BIOS, and running AGP4x.
And check DMA for your disks in the device manager.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Just a follow-up: turning on the DMA for my CD-ROM and hard drive
eliminated the stuttering/pause problem I was having. All systems go now.
