Are you still using a CPU/motherboard combo that was released in 1998?

Refresh rate is set to 'optimal', whatever THAT means.  Monitor is a Compaq V75
- don't know what the rate is SUPPOSED to be.  I'll have to find that...

But the fact that it worked fine for 90% of the race tells me the hardware
works FINE...

Good question.. I had it set to 'automatic' but since I set it to 1024
min and 1024 max I have no stuttering problems anymore.
In the post on ras explaining this there was something mentioned that
the ideal vmem setting would be 3 or 4 times your normal memory.
I have 256mb so I set it to 1024.

Well.  The software works fine on my hardware.

So I'd guess it's either your hardware or the host operating system.
