V2 worth it for GPL?

V2 worth it for GPL?

by Otto Mathek » Fri, 16 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I know this is a topic that has been beat to death, but now the V3 is
out, I am waiting for V2
prices to drop as I want to keep my Stealth 220 for ICR2 and am
wondering if the V2 will up performance in GPL.  My system is a Celeron
464 with 64 megs of ram.  I am getting
35-38 fps in GPL at 640 by 480 and about 26 fps in 800 by 600 (not
racing, practicing - I still drive horribly).  As I am using a 17"
monitor, 800 by 600 looks a lot better, but after driving with the fps
maxed out in ICR2, I am spoiled and know how much easier it is to drive
at high frame rates.

Does anybody have experience adding a V2 to a setup like mine?  What
kind of performance boost did you get?

TIA

With your system specs a V2 should max the framerate at 800x600.  And with a
V3 it would max at 1024x768, I know because I just replaced a V2 with a V3
3000 in my Celeron 416 system.  You are right, it is hard to go back to
640x480 after running at the higher resolutions.

My system is a celeron 416mhz, 128 mb ram a stealth2 220 and a voodoo2 card,
I have ran gpl with the voodoo2 card, but than it looks "blurred" , however
with the stealth (redition) it looks great. My screen resolution is 800x600
with an avg 30 fps. The framerate inrease with a voodoo2 is almoast zero.
So my conclusion is: stick to your stealth and forget about the voodoo2.

I have the V1  and use 640x480  but when i switch to 600x800 the screen is heaps
darker?

wots the prob?

   Otto,

While I have a AMD k6-2/350,my primary graphics card is a Diamond
Stealth 3000. I upgraded from a Voodoo l to a Voodoo 2,and there is a big
difference in frame rates. I now get 36fps with all graphics and just cars
in the mirrors. BTW,the Voodoo 2 will work just fine with your Diamond
Stealth 220.

and I`m getting 36 fps with 19 cars , drops to about 32-34 when starting
from behind , gets up to 36 fps after a1/2 lap.

Hi, what about your GPL graphic details?  What do you have turned on
or off?  There's no way I can get 36fps with 19 cars with most or all
of the graphic options turned on, running at 800x600...more like 20 -
25 fps, if I recall.

Here are my system specs:

PII 300 (Dell Dimension XPS D300)
64MB RAM
Turtle Beach Montego soundcard

3Dfx reference drivers 2.53 (I think)
Matrox Millennium II AGP videocard
PDPI L4 digital gamecard w/ lastest drivers
TSW wheel/pedals on dual brake/throttle axis
Win95 OSR2 with DirectX 6 (dx6eng.exe)

I keep thinking I should be getting better fps in GPL with this
configuration, but maybe I'm wrong.

TIA,

Dave

Hi
All graphic details is turned on ( except the mirror detail level , it`s
"cars and track ) and the "Detail Bias" is almost to the + .

Stealth 3000? Never seen it...
Anyway, I can't speak for using a Voodoo 2, but if you want to play games
OTHER than GPL, I would wholeheartedly recommend it.  NFS3 runs very slow on

G200.  BUT, the framerates are the other way around in GPL :)

So, I must admit I'm still surprised that you can get those
framerates.  When you compare our configurations, the only difference
mentioned so far is the cpu and V2 card:

versus

PII 300 MHz with dual 12MB V2's in SLI at 95MHz

I'm really ignorant of how your oc'd Celeron would compare to the
300MHz PII, so if any GPL-hardware gurus can comment, I'd appreciate
it.  The only time I can get 36fps with 19 cars and all graphics
options turned on as P.Ivar has, is if there are not many trackside
objects displayed at the moment and I'm either on a portion of the
track by myself or as part of a straight line of cars (i.e., you can
really only see the car right in front of you, not the cars in front
of him).

TIA,

Dave

The Celeron 300A has a Pentium II core (CPU) and it's cache is only
128k, but it runs at full processor speed (compared to 512k cache on
the PII running at 1/2 CPU speed).  It's pretty much a wash between a
300A and a PII/300 for running GPL.

The nice thing about the 300A is that it can be comfortably
overclocked to 450 MHz (well, 85 to 90% of them could be), with the
bus overclocked to 100 MHz.  In that configuration, it's quite
comparable to a PII/450.  And its up to 50% faster than running it at
300 MHz.  That's the big difference.

That's why the Celeron 300A was the bargain of late '98, giving you
top of the line performance for minimum bucks (under $100 eventually).
Of course, Intel has changed everything now, so you gotta go looking
for a new bang for the buck winner.  :)

Hi

about the same result that  you get.The difference between 300MHz and 464MHz
is incredible .

P.I.

I have seen my fps down to 25 , but it`s only for a short moment , during
practice and race with 19 cars it`s at 36 fps , stable.

V2 worth it for GPL?

Processor speed is the bottleneck here.  Most of the time your V2 cards are
sitting on their hands waiting for data from the CPU.  Sorry to say, but having
two of them is not going to help without the raw horsepower of a faster CPU.  The
Celeron at 464 is doing a much better job of utilizing a single card, hence the
higher frame rates.  I've been down this road myself, albeit with a single V2
card, and there is no substitute for processor speed.
