F1 2001 Steering using a joystick

I'm having trouble getting the steering to work well with my current
joystick.  My setup: Win2000 SP2, GeForce2, Athlon 1.4GHz, Det 12.41.
I still having a very hard time holding a straight line at high speeds.
It feels like I'm driving a panel van at 200mph - I just don't have any
fine control.
Since I'm an F1 sim newbie and haven't found the $$ for a nice wheel,
what should I be adjusting to get this to work?  Is it really this hard
to drive a straight line in a real F1 car?  Do the real cars have
progressive steering to give finer control at high speed?
        TIA.

You'll probably need to go into the controls / advanced options and move
the X-axis range down to say 20%.  While you're in there, move the
X-axis deadzone to 0%.

In the main controls screen, move the "sensitivity with speed" option
lower until you can handle it.

It takes some tweeking, but they gave you the tools to make any
controller feel good :)
