GPL and WinXP (continued....)

by Bert Hoenigman » Fri, 27 Jun 2003 06:51:36

Hi Guys,

I finally got GPL to run under WinXP, but had to move it to a FAT32
partition.  Nothing I tried would make it run under NTFS.  8-(

Anyways -- I'm now transferring all of my GPL settings over to the new
installation.  The 1.2 patch, CPUfix and D3D patches all went well, and
all of my set-ups, saved replays, etc have been moved over.  However,
I'm having problems when I move my CARS folder over.  This folder
contains updated cars from GPLEA (I think), but when I start GPL with
those cars in the folder, I get sent back to the desktop.  With the
original (ugly) cars, everything runs fine.  Can someone clue me in to
what I need to do to have the graphics (ie -cars, etc) back up to the
level I had under Win98?  Do I have to re-download them and re-install
them?

Also, I now see first-hand how bad the sound is using a SoundBlaster
Live, and I'm ready to replace the sound card.  I'm leaning towards a
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, but I'm wondering what most of you guys running
XP use with GPL?

Thanks!

Select the properties for the gpl folder, click advanced, 'allow indexing on
this folder' to get it working with an ntfs partition. You don't need to
enable the indexing service though.

There's no difference between OS's as far as patches are concerned, in
theory you should be able to just copy the entire gpl folder over & just run
gpl.exe, but I guess that's what you tried!
If you haven't kept the install files for the various patches, try this:

Copy the contents of one car at a time to a clean install of gpl, and run it
to see if it works. Do the same with the tracks (you'll have to update the
season.ini too though for addon tracks) and you should find the culprit.

To help narrow it down & save some time, if the problem is caused by a track
update, choosing another track will work. If the problem is caused by a car
update, select a different car (using training mode, so that no other cars
are loaded by the AI).

A popular solution for the SB Live cards is to run dxdiag.exe (it's in the
WinNT folder), go to the sound page & set the acceleration to 'basic' (one
up from the lowest). There are other solutions, but this works fine for me
in win2k.

Thx for the reply, Malc.

However, I've tried most of what you suggested already:

1.  When I had GPL installed on an NTFS drive, I set it to allow indexing on the
GPL folder, but it didn't help,
2.  I've also already set my sound card to basic acceleration, and the sound in
GPL still crackles and pops badly.
3.  I don't think that I have any problems with any GPL tracks, as GPL runs fine
(cars are just ugly) until I update the car folder.  I will try your suggestion
to update cars one at a time to see who the culprit is.

Thanks!
Bert

Check for read-only files too. Since you put it on a fat drive I guess this
isn't a big problem for you now though.

Turn the sound down in windows (and in gpl) and compensate by turning your
speaker volume up.

Good luck with it, but remember the mods are great, but the driving
experience is what really counts ;-)

I still have it installed on an NTFS partition, as well, so how do I setXP to
allow indexing the GPL folder's read-only files too?

I had the same problem as you and moving to the FAT32 drive was the
only thing that helped. I didn't want to move it and I sure didn't
want to create another drive, but I didn't want to give up GPL either,
so after trying everything under the sun I finally tried the one thing
that worked.

Does your motherboard have onboard sound by any chance?  I recently put an
ASUS P4P800 mobo in my system and never even bothered putting the Live card
back in, the onboard sound has been fantastic.  Probably not as good as an
Audigy, but sounds as clear as the Live, works in all games, and has
virtually no penalty for 3D sound.  Tossed in PD's sound pack and GPL sounds
absolutely incredible now.

Yeah BD, I hear ya.   I ended up buying Partition Magic 8 to do the deed.  Got a
great deal on it too.  $19.99 after rebate this week at CompUSA.  Well worth it!

Yeah, Haqsau, That's a good thought.  My mobo has onboard sound, but I don't
think it's anything to brag about.  (Epox 8kha+ mobo)  Definitely not NVidea 2
quality.  But perhaps I'll try it....  Do I have to physically remove the SBLive
card to do it, or just disable it (and how is that done in XP)?  Removing it
might be self-defating because I also use the SBLive's game port for my TSW
pedals....

Just remove the read-only attribute. None of the files should be read-only,
and it can cause problems if some are.

This could be wrong (sounds unbelievable at least) but someone said a long
time ago (when W2k was released) that you had to do a fresh NTFS format, not
convert the drive from FAT to NTFS. I've also heard GPL would only run off
the D: drive for some people.
If you do upgraded from Win98 to WinXP the drive would be converted. And a
lot of potential problems and old Win98 rubbish would be dragged along to
WinXP. But I assume you both did a clean install on a new drive and
dualbooted to be able to do a smooth transfer?
You did off course try to run GPL as Administrator and not as Limited user?
There could be problems with file permissions to run GPL as Limited user.

GPL and WinXP (continued....)

by bertr » Fri, 27 Jun 2003 21:33:19

I installed NTFS fresh onto a brand new drive.  After GPL wouldn't run on it, I
ended up using Partition magic to creat a FAT 32 partition from the new NTFS
partition.  I did not upgrade on this drive from Win98 to Win XP.  Howver, I did
attempt to copy my old GPL folder over to the new drive.  That didn't work, so I
erased it and tried installing basic GPL onto the NTFS drive, then applied the
1.2, D3D and Fast CPU patches, and it wouldn't run either.  Then I tried setting
the indexing thing, and that didn't help either.  So, I gave up and installe dit
all on FAT32.

I guess it's potluck whether GPL will run on NTFS.

All I need to do now is update my cars from GPLEA and get my installation to
recognize all of my tracks and I'll be a happy camper.  (Right now, I can only
load the original 11 tracks, even though I have about 60 in my tracks folder...)

Pardon my ignorance.  What is NTFS?

I'm worried.  Thinking of getting a two new computers which will be
networked.  So, probably will be using Windows XP.  Is it always this much
hassle to run GPL on a new system with Win XP?

Or should I have a separate drive with Win98se on it?

TIA for the helpful comments.

NT File system...its been in use since NT came out...much more secure and robust than FAT or FAT32
ever was or could be. And allows addressing up to several terabytes..whereas FAT32 is limited to
files sizes of 2Gb or 4Gb (can't remember of the top of my head, dont use it anymore;))

FAT/FAT16
FAT32
NTFS
HPFS - high performance file system, originally used by OS/2

NTFS is a "new" file system that you need to format your hard drive in, in
order to have XP provide the maximum stability benefits.  However, you can
partition your drive so you have a separate FAT32 partition (Win 9x's file
system), and WinXP will recognize it, as well.

Although I had problems with running GPL under NTFS, I also made some errors
in copying it over from my old hard drive.  I finally have it working properly
in a FAT32 partition, but I may give it another go under NTFS.

For those that still care, I ended up having to _carefully_ copy all of the
files over to the new drive/system, then I had to re-install all of the
patches (1.2, D3D, and Fast CPU).  In order to apply the 1/2 patch, I had to
copy the original GPL.exe from the CD into my GPL directory.  Otherwise the
patch gave me an erro message saying that I didn't have the correct version of
GPL.

Whew!  Well, now, all is right with the world again.  It'll even be better if
I get GPL to work under NTFS.  I'll report back on my results.

Bert
