1.  Stutter.  Intermittent.  Plenty of it!  Sometimes it's so bad I end up
off the track.

2.  The Frame Rate Counter.  Reads something like 2.47fps, but it's
obviously MUCH higher than that.  When not stuttering, it's smooth as glass
with a full field.

the stuttering is probably one of the services running in the background on
your system. Under WinME it often was the STMGR (the system backup/restore
service) that started backing up because it mistook racing through Masta at
180mph for 'System is Idle' and started its backup run. That may be
something to look into. If you don't see the HD light flickering, then maybe
your automatic update is looking for updates online? Something in that
ballpark.

You might want to disable N4's watchdog in core.ini. That's not a very
promising step, but you could at least try it for starters, as an additional
measure.

As for the fps counter, if you're on a fast CPU, you might need that
'fast-cpu' patch from Papy - do you have that installed yet?

BTW... I'm a degragger nut-case.  Minimum once-weekly, and sometimes more if
the computer is going to sit for a while.

But, then again, I tend to move gigs and gigs and gigs of data on and off
this machine, so it frags up pretty quick :)
