If you could improve on GPL, what would you change?

Personally, I'd add in some weather effects.

Second, I'd fine tune the detail of the buildings, especially at
Monza, to look more like they do in SBK.

Tis about really...

H'mmm, I never get time to look at the buildings anyhow.... If I
did, I would be straight into the next amco!!!
WX would be nice, but not at the expense of frame rate.... maybe
later eh!

I would like a 'save' option when you get dumped out of on-line
race's!
Also, to be able to 'stay-in' as spectator after being warped
out.....!
Any more?

I would like support for D3D or OpenGL.  Also perhaps a "Tutor" type
program that would look at your replay and say something like "Ok.
You lost it in this corner because you were still braking hard when
you turned.  You can fix that by 1) braking earlier. 2) adjusting
this, 3) adjusting that" etc etc.  Might sound like a stupid question
but does either of the manual that came with the Sim really explain
all that stuff or does it just kinda say "This moves weight here".
Not very good at RTFM'ing myself.  Keep falling asleep or daydreaming
about whupping James Garner at a high banked Monza. :-)

Read the Manual. Steve Smith's strategy guide, "Four Wheel Drift" is worth the
price of GPL, IMO.

BTW...to add to the GPL wishlist, 3D sound support.

I'd like a ghost of my fastest lap when I start a lap in testing, i could
see if i'm slower etc, would make it more interesting anyway, i'd also like
riems, lemans, brooklands, brands hatch, monza oval etc etc ect

maybe i'm just greedy

This is certainly in the un-necessary eyecandy department, but....

I would love to see the GPL driver heads bob back and forth and left/right
like they do in GP2, it always amazed me in GP2 how real the other drivers
looked. The GPL cars and drivers have a cool graphics detail where you
can actually see the driver arms and steering turn as the wheels turn, but
the driver heads look a bit like scale model cars/drivers without any
head-movement or bobbing to the g-forces or bounces of the car. This is
especially noticeable when the car flips upside down and it almost looks
like the car is bouncing on the driver's head :P

Like I said though, this is being really, really picky as long as we're
talking about wishlists, I never really notice it in the important part
of the simulation which is in the driving of GPL, only when watching replays
do I notice the heads.

Seeyas on the track.

Improve *ON* GPL or improve *IN* GPL?

If I had the ability to persuade Papyrus to do the first I would have them
recreate either the original Can-Am series, the Targa Florio of the 1960's
or Le Mans of the same period.

If it was a matter of improving the existing product I would simply like to
see the Cooper and Honda cars depicted more correctly (rather than using the
Brabham and Eagle), a simple method of selecting individual AI entrants for
each GP and a SAVE GAME facility.

a) True D3D or OpenGL rasterizer, no more beta.
b) Fixed the collision detection for online racing.
c) No more trackside objects that are simple billboarded bitmaps that have
no substance.  Utterly ruins the experience if you***up and slide
through the grass and then through a large object that looks like its there
but isn't.  If you dont want to put it as a 3D object and its inside the
"invisible walls", then just dont put it in. :?
d) Fix the tree billboards so that they dont look bad when you get close to
them.
e) Instead of writing GPL2, put out some new track and car packs for say the
cars/tracks of the Mario/Emmo/et al era. :)
r) Release information on track and car file structures and how they work so
that people like Paul Hoad who have been working on track/car editors have
an easier time.
g) For fluff, when viewing a replay have the option of converting that
replay to an avi or mpeg file.  Now that would be killer.
h) I think rest of my "wants" have been addressed by Papyrus in the GPL1.1
patch. :)

Very good idea, especially when so many 3D cards _don't_ support 3Dfx.

Good idea. I wouldn't mind seeing a Directors feature, for the replay,
so that we could edit them.

Doesn't something like this happen in CPR?

Actually, it's not all that _picky_. If they can include details like
arm raising, and the ability to see the other cars steering wheel
move, even in on-line races, they could have included this.

What I would change in GPL is the "rev limiter" in F2 and F3.  I'd like
to see the full use of 10,000 rpm's in the ferrari but still have the HP
the F2's and 3's have.

What would you change in GPL?

by Andrew MacPhers » Fri, 18 Jun 1999 04:00:00

The ability to race against someone else's replay would be superb. In fact
combining ghost laps could revolutionise offline racing... and make some
programmer's life hell, I'm sure :-)

Other things on my mind for a while...

1) More than 2 initials in chat! Frequent "same initial" clashes occur.

2) The ability to edit replay camera views. Flanker (Su27 sim) has
possibly the best mission recorder in the world, and the ability to edit
the recorder views is brilliant. Something similar for GPL would be great.

3) I'd *really* like a better way of IDing other drivers in racing. A
split helmet (left/right sides different colours?) or something similar
would help. Or even something as unrealistic but useful as the toggleable
ID labels in Falcon4.
