If you are having problems switching from Rendition to 3DFX this is how
I had to do it.

1. Re-install GPL ( first remove everything)
2. During the install select 3DFX as your card
3. Once installed, Go to your GPL folder and create an appbck folder
4.  Within your appbck folder create two sub folders and name them:
      3DFX & Rendition

5. Copy your current app file into your 3DFX sub folder. The app file
will have a line in it:

      Graphics ]
lastRasterizerDLL = rast3dfx.dll         ; Last rasterizer DLL selected

6.  Get back in GPL and select options and select Rendition, click on
ok, and then click   on the green box, then exit back out of the sim.

7.  Go to your GPL folder. Your app will now have a line in it:

[ Graphics ]
lastRasterizerDLL = renddll.dll          ; Last rasterizer DLL selected

8.  Copy this app file into your Rendition sub folder you created
earlier.

9.  Now if you want to change cards you will have to copy either your
Rendition app file or your 3DFX app file into the GPL folder.

This is the only way I could get the sim to recognize my Voodoo2 card
after selecting the Rendition card in the sim. Once I selected the
Rendition card in the sim, I could not get the sim to recognize the 3DFX
card.

Thanks for all of the suggestions in an earlier thread.

So you're saying while running in Rendition, if you go to the options
screen and select 3Dfx the rast3dfx.dll line is not written to the
app.ini after you exit GPL?

Yes that is correct, would not write to it.

This might be a dumb idea, but check app.ini and see if it has somehow
been given a "read only" attribute.

also, if you switch to rendition and your screen goes crazy when restarting,
read the readme entry about win98 resolution switching not working with
multiple users ;-(

GPL & How to change cards

by doktor » Wed, 07 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I thought it was just me!!

Here's my problem, and I guess it's other's too. In Windows98, I use my own
"user profile". My brother sometimes uses my computer, and I don't want him
to mess with my settings, so he uses the "default" profile (just clicks
cancel at the password screen).

I have a Diamond Stealth S220, and run it at 1024 x .. resolution. When I
try to run a game (such as GPL), I can't. This is because the screen
resolution will NOT change. I discovered that I can't even change it from
the Diamond Display properties box.

A pain in the ass, that's for sure. I contacted Diamond when I first noticed
this many months back and they said they were aware of the problem.. What I
did in the mean time was to "log off" my profile, and use the default
profile every time I wanted to play a game.

I just discovered the other day a WORK-AROUND. Go to Control Panel,
Passwords. Find the box that says "all users of this computer use the same
use the same preferences and desktop settings." Select it! It will then say
that you need to restart the computer in order for the change to take
effect. Click "NO". And then go off and play GPL or whatever you want to do.
When you are done, go back to Control Panel, Passwords, and re-select "Users
can customize their preferences..." You may have to re-click the two boxes
below, if that's how you had it set up before. Once again, click "NO" when
asked if you want to restart.

It's still a bit of a pain in the ass, but is a hell of a lot better than
having to log off. Now I can play on the internet without having to
disconnect and log off!

If anyone knows if it's possible to write a Windows macro that will do the
above steps, that would be a godsend!! Better yet, if Diamond/Microsoft
could fix the bug, that would be great. I don't know what's taking them so
long to fix it... it seems like a fairly simple problem to fix.

Oh.. one other thing: Can someone tell me why the MAXIMUM resolution
available in GPL is ONLY 800 x 600 mode?? I don't see any reason why it
shouldn't be able to run at 1024 x .. res.

Thanks!!

I've had this problem with every video card/driver combination I've
tested, so it looks to be a problem in Win98 itself.  It's a major pain
in the ass, so until Microsoft gets around to fixing it, I've turned off
user profiles and in the readme suggested users to the same.

As for the resolution, the 4MB cards will be limited to 800x600.

The user profiles thing is listed in the readme.txt file under Windows
98 issues.

The S220 only has 4 megs of memory. This is not sufficient for
resolutions above 800x600. Move up to an 8 meg Thriller if you need
higher resolutions.
Cheers,
Chris
