Best 3D card for P166 & GPL

by PaiK » Fri, 21 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi ras!

I've a P166, 32 Mb, and I'm thinking buy a 3D card for play GPL,
network play with my P2 & TNT.

What 3D card is better for a P166? I read that Banshee uses less CPU
power through Glide.

Anyone playing GPL with P166 and Banshee? what fps and resolution get?

Thanks!

Get a Rendition board. You can get a Diamond Stealth S220 4mb for $30 or a
Hercules Thriller 3D 8mb for around $80. For a P166 Rendition will give the
best bang for your buck.

On my P200 I went from 20fps on a V1 to a solid 36fps on the Thriller with
more eye candy.

With an iP166(MMX?), the best solution would be to try and get a
(used) Rendition based card, preferably with 8MB memory. Those cards
depend least on CPU power. The second best option would be a VooDoo1
add-on card, if you turn off the mirrors. But on a 166, neither will
be entirely satisfying. Stay away from nVidia cards for such a slow
system. I managed to install GPL on an AMD K6 200 with a Riva 128
(4MB) card: it looks good, but the framerate is real bad - around 12
fps while driving alone. I don't know how things are looking with a
Banshee in this kind of system, but I would guess that this card will
not perform at its best with such a slow processor.

I use a P200 w/ Voodoo1 and I can race with 5 other cars, but any more
than that and the framerate drops to low (even with 5 it would
sometimes drop to single digits).

My brother-in-law had a P166 w/ Redition and he was not able to race
with any cars but himself. He just got a new P3 though . . .

I would suggest a faster CPU and a Rendition, if GPL is going to be
your primary game.

How can this be?  I'm running a P200 with 64 MB and a Voodoo I and I rarely see
20 FPS with any other cars.  Rarely see 36 in training, often see 8 on the
starting grid.

Thank god, this sounds more like what I see.

Forget a 'used' Rendition....pick up a $30 Stealth II S220 (Make sure its
the S220, not the lame G460 or whatever the Intel chipset version is) and it
will do you VERY well.  Plus you have enough dough left to buy a cheap
Voodoo for non-Papyrus games.

I've been playing with P166MMX  64MB and Banshee lately -  other
machine is dead -  using latest reference drivers and Banshee patch

The best settings I've come up with for framerate ar as follows:

800x600 resolution

turned off all mirror textures except car texture

turned off ahead textures for terrain, objects, crowds, clouds   -
this still gives good visual clues trackside for braking points, etc

turned off dynamic lighting and specular highlights

detail bias 1/4 in from the left

mirrors refresh every third frame

sounds at 4

All this gives 28-36 fps when racing online  -  lowest rate I've seen
on a grid is about 14
