V2 SLI or V3 3000 with GPL?

by Sondo » Tue, 29 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I have a 12mb Diamond Monster II and was considering purchasing another one
to run SLI.  I have the rebate offer of $50 from diamond.
Will I see a measurable performance increase with two cards running GPL, or
should I get the V3 3000?  Any comments or recommendations appreciated.

I have a voodoo 3 2000 PCI running GPL and it works very well (need the
glide patch from thePits.com though) - faster than SLI, but as a game
card, voodoo 3 may not necessarily be best in terms of future proofing &
also color depth is limited. TNT maybe the one to go for in the long
term. I am not that bothered - swapped the voodoo 3 for a gameboy and
they didn't have new TMT or any other next generation cards at the time.

Don't waste your money on a SLI setup for GPL - it will more likely hurt
your framerates than improve them.  Get the V3/3K instead.

V2 SLI or V3 3000 with GPL?

I have SLI with GPL.. and it works great..  I have a 333 and can get 36fps at
1024x768..  which is the main reason I got another.   V3 is too expensive.
TNT2 isn't cheap and no-one knows if it works...   V2's are now REALLY cheap..
so it may be the way to go..   if you wait..  you'll be waiting for ever..   I
think another V2 might be a good option..   What CPU you got??

V2 SLI or V3 3000 with GPL?

I was SLI for a while (It generated to much heat for my computer), I took
them out and I'm running a Voodoo3. I think the Voodoo3 is much better than
SLI.
I can get 1280x1024 in every game (that supports it).
The extra Voodoo2 is not worth the extra money. If you don't get a Voodoo3,
save your money.

I've been running V2 SLI for a few months now and am considering upgrading
too.  Will V3 3000 straight out of the box work with GPL or would I need
anything special (I've done the glide 2.53 in my GPL startup dir thing).

Thanks,
  Dennis

Can you get 12801024 in GPL? Every setup I've tried sticks the res down to
512384, even though it *says* 12801024.

Yes, I can run 1280x1024 on my V3/3k, P2-300 with 36fps (except at
start) and all detail on. I actually run it mostly at 1024 because the
text is a little larger in chat mode for online racing and I have a
17' monitor. If I had a 19" or larger monitor I would run 1280x1024.

What I saw as the biggest difference when going from 1 12mb V2 to an SLI rig
wasn't improved frame rates, but the ability to run 1024x768 at roughly
(slightly better) fps than 800x600 (except at the start or in the pits).

huh? They are $99 in the U.S. Probably the one of the cheapest
video cards on the market. (and they kick ass!)

Yes, you can. It becomes a little slow, however.

was an improvement, but with the V3 the CPU becomes the bottleneck. I now

the START of a race at 1024x768. The biggest improvement with a V3 is the
ability to run at 1280x1024. The new dashpanels  in 16bit(I think) look
awesome at this res.
To summarize: get a second V2 if moneys tight - you will certainly notice
the improved framerates, get a V3 (preferable 3K) for future CPU enhancement
and the ability to run at higher res. A V3 3K at 1280 is faster than one V2
at 1024 on a Cel450.

That's bull. This is a common mistake to leave buffer swaps synced with
monitor refresh. For some reason installing the 2nd V2 does this by default.
I know for a fact that SLI is faster in GPL than single V2.

It's also commonly known that the V3/3k is faster than an SLI setup.

Very true, but that wasn't the point. I only pointed out that SLI is faster
in GPL than a single V2, the fact that you had misleading information on. If
someone has, say TNT2 card and a V2 and wants to keep them, it may be
feasible to add another V2 to increase GPL performance.
