Why, the TNT2 cards are faster than the V2SLI for GPL.  TNT2 Ultras are
better still.  And yes, I have a TNT2 Ultra AND a V2SLI combo.

The only thing I needed to do, was set the limit to 2 meg textures.
Works great.
Works great on all the other games I've got also.

GPL is capped at 36 fps, which a single Voodoo 2 can reach, given
sufficient CPU power and not-quite-maxed detail settings.

Are you getting consistent 36 fps on your TNT2 Ultra, even in
traffic?  What resolution?  What mirror refresh setting?  What
CPU?

My V3 3000 card runs GPL very well. I do have to limit texture memory to 2mb
to keep the colors from screwing up.

On my PII450 my V2 SLI was actually slightly faster then a v3 3000. I used
the George Smiley patch to get the proper textures. I returned the v3 3000
and will wait for the 3500. (I want the video in for my camcorder). I also
will enjoy freeing up 2 pci slots.

Yes, and at what resolution? 640x480. :)

Yes, 1024x768 and 15 cars is all I was using before and haven't changed it.
Mirror refresh set to 1. P2400 for the cpu.

What amazes me is that a lot of people *seem to be* considering a frame
rate of 26-29 fps "at the start" and "when there's a big wreck" as being
completely acceptable.

IMHO, those are precisely the instances (in an online race) when you
simply cannot function sufficiently unless your system is capable of 36
fps.  I'm running a P2/450 (overclocked to 504) with 256mb of ram and a
voodoo2/12 card, and I can't get 36 fps all the time (including the two
instances I cited above) unless I run my detail bias at 90% and turn off
some of the object detail.

IMHO, connection quality and frame rate are much more important than
realism and eye-candy.

We could all sit here and argue semantics all freakin day, but the
clearly smart purchase here would be a V3/3K.  There's no point scored,
or match won.

In the end, the original poster bought a V3/3K.

John this was my Point of "Point, Set & Match." No more.
No less.. Some of these threads just go on endlessly. You
know it.. I know it.. Whether it is a miss-spelled word, an
English lesson etc... I was not trying to single you out & if
it appeared to be I apologize! I feel it would be nice if we
had more "rec.autos.simulators" discussions instead of all
this "hair-splittiing".. All constructive comments welcome.
Cheers Thom_j.

I think what we're seeing is all of the Papy faithful going a little stir
crazy waiting for a patch on one sim, and for an update on another.
Everything has been discussed to death, so our only recourse is to attack
each other's opinions about the best hardware for a given sim.

Papy could solve the whole problem by releasing the GPL patch and a N3
demo... :-)
