GPL V3 vs V2 SLI

by rob » Thu, 14 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Hello

I had some problems installing SLI for GPL 1.0.0.0
after changing drivers it works but not much quicker then single V2
So I wonder if changing to Voodoo3 gives me better framerate .
GPL is my main game so that's most important.
But it would be nice to play other games with a good framerate
My main videocard is Viper 550 16 MB

PLease some advice

Thanx

I've been using 12Mb v2 SLI from day one with GPL.

I don't know what single V2 performance on GPL is like.

a v3/3000 16Mb so there is no advantage in GPL alone.

well I've found no difference between v2sli and v3/3000 in GPL.

what is your processor? I personally wish that Papyrus would
get together a proper OpenGL rasteriser so I can dump the v2's
for a g400max or something non-Glide. The v3/3000 sux compared
to the other cards but I like GPL so much.

It's your primary display adapter that you need to replace, not your v2s -
they'll work alongside the g400max that you want.  That way you'll have the
best of both worlds, a card with the fancy features you crave alongside the
hardware that actually supports what you play.

I own a v3 3000 and don't find that it 'sux'.  It performs well in -every-
game that I play.  It may not have some of the more advanced features that
other cards (and none of -my- games) support but that does not mean that it
sux.

To respond to the original question, I'd say a processor upgrade will give
most improvement as v2s seem fairly capable of dealing with GPL from what I
read here.  Depending on the spec of your machine you may find that a v3
slows you down.

Have you disabled "wait for vertical sync" or whatever it might be
called with your setup?  I remember being quite disappointed when my
second V2 didn't yield any performance increase, until I did so.
Another thing to check is that "disable SLI mode" is not checked.  Hope
this helps.

well I have that 464Mhz Celeron, 128Mb RAM and an Abit BH6.
I use a Vortex2 PCI clone soundcard. Do you use an ISA
soundcard? That could be causing it. ISA cards slow down
your PC. I also use the Thrustmaster T2. I use a 100% PCI
system... I hate ISA cards.

The very worst I've seen is about 24 fps in 1,024 x 768, everything
turned on + 19 cars and me at the back of the grid (!!!) and that's
a Monaco or Rouen where there's a lot of textures at the beginning.

Once I thread my way thru he field it settles back down to 36 fps.

This situation is identical on a v3/3000. What I hate is that fine
mesh and dithered smoke that the v2/v3's have.

ps. I know I slammed the v3/3000 but I seriously crave the stuff
like dual-head, 32-bit rendering etc. of the g400/geforce/s3 etc.
