GPL=4 fps??

by w. spilma » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I'm getting about 4 fps average with my GPL. I hope some rep from the
company will read this, if not its your loss, I ain't searching far and
wide to give you the benefit of what I will be telling avaryone about
GPL. I did all the "cut-down" graphics options thing, etc...   My
joystick will only function under "generic driver" setting, steers
backwards, and the game moves poorly through the menus (tending to lock
up my computer there). I am really getting tired of paying for crapware.
I ain't searching far and wide to get somebody else's garbage to run
either. It's going back to EB tomorrow, so I'll be seeing my money again
and the makers of this shit will be seeing their game again.

Sorry about the semi-rant but I'm really disappointed and disgusted. Why
did the demo run so smoothly? No AI?***it, it ain't my problem to
worry about.

GPL=4 fps??

Just a guess.. please check off as many boxes as apply:

[   ] -  You have a P-133 or lower
[   ] -  You have 32MB or RAM or lower
[   ] -  You have NOT got Direct-X v. 6... possibly not even v. 5?
[   ] -  You do NOT have a 3D-capable card (let me guess, you've got the
Virge S3 Trio, right?)
[   ] -  You have a Voodoo-based card, but haven't yet installed the most
recent drivers
[   ] -  You installed GPL with the wrong graphics-accelerator option (3Dfx
instead of Rendition?)

Let's hope I'm wrong here.. but I have a feeling most of those boxes will be
filled.

If you do have a decent system (what is it?), and are experiencing problems,
then there is something fishy going on with your system (runs fine on a
P-166 with 32MB, 4mb Rendition or Voodoo1 graphics card, with minimal
graphic options on, btw).

Post another message, and I'll see if I can help you. GPL is such a great
game, it's a shame to see someone giving up on it already.

Let us know what's happening..

The box is misleading, while it simply lists a Win95/8 compatible video
card with 2mb memory as a minimum, a 3DFX or Rendition card is really
required.  Bad Sierra, Bad Sierra!

Not as much as you.....

System specs?  Never seen once in any of your posts.  Therefore, for those
of us with decent computers and video cards see your posts as trolls, since
we experience none of your problems.  Sure, it isn't butter-smooth with a
lot of AI cars on a 200mmx, but it DOES run pretty well if you turn some
things down.  Downright fluid on my P2-400 and Voodoo 2.

If you're not a troll, post your specs.  Maybe you have too weak a machine
for it, or maybe something isn't setup right.  Strangely enough, with some
DETAILS you might even get some HELP, and could enjoy the sim.

Seems to me that--considering how many of the rest here have the same
problems as you (practically zip)-- that you need to look somewhere else for
your troubles besides the software.  I suggest your hardware and drivers.
Pardon me while I return to this piece of sh*t.

Have a nice day.

Wait a minute.... Are you saying that the P2000 by Philips is NOT faster
than a P200???? Boy, and I thought that Philips had discovered the
Pentium 15 years before intel.

Is your L2 cache enabled? If I disable my L2 cache in the bios, my P200 MMX
/ Voodoo1 goes from ~20 fps to ~4 fps ...

If you have more than 64MB RAM, some older m'boards will have this
problem. I can't remember exactly why, but it really slows down. Try
removing RAM until you get to 64MB.

Cheers!

GPL=4 fps??

by Joe Wals » Tue, 20 Oct 1998 04:00:00

It's because only the HX chipset (and some of the other 3rd party chipsets)
could cache RAM sizes greater than 64Mb when the tag RAM was installed
(option on most boards of the time).  I currently run a TX board with 1
128Mb (10ns) DIMM, and don't have that problem.  To my knowledge, the TX
still doesn't cache > 64Mb, but it doesn't ***like the FX or VX did.

Cheers
