Get a 12Mb Voodoo2 or Rendition based 3D card, I don't *think* your
card is either?
Try overclocking your cpu, (you may be able to get 350, or 375, or
even 415MHz?) depending on your m/b? No, I'm not gonna tell you how,
(I'm not going through all that again!) check out any of the many
good overclocking sites on the web.

PS i just read peter gagg's message and just a note to him, an AMD is socket
7, a BX mobo i believe is slot 1 (pentium 2)

- Make sure the L2 cache is enabled. It is possible that your computer
vendor disabled it, since some super socket 7 boards don't always run
reliably at 100 (or 95) Mhz FSB with L2 cache enabled. If it is
disabled, and the system hangs after enabling it, take the whole thing
and return it to the place you bought it!
- You don't say which version of Windows you have. If it's Win95b (aka
OSR 2.x) or Win98, you're fine. The original Win95 doesn not have
OpenGL support out of the box, though. In order for the OpenGL patch
to work properly, you need a file called opengl95.exe which you can
download from www.microsoft.com. Click on support, then search the
knowledge base for the exact filename. You also need drivers for the
740i card which support OpenGL. Possibly, the support is included in
the standard drivers, but you might want to verify this.
While I agree that RAM equals engine displacement (you can never have
enough of either), it is not the cause of Fabian's framerate problems.
32MB are enough for GPL to run - I had 32 and upgraded to 96MB, and it
didn't make a difference in framerate.
He has a K6-2, and therefore uses a motherboard with a socket 7
chipset. The BX is a slot 1 chipset. I'd recommend PC100 memory
anyway. It is useful for the K6-2 300 and upwards, since they are
designed to run at 100 MHz FSB (the 333 is different, though.) It's
only marginally more expensive than "66MHz" memory.
The Intel 740 graphics chip is a low cost 2D/3D chip. There are some
known problems with VIA MVP3 based mainboards and this chip, so maybe
the problem lies there (What chipset is your mainboard using, Fabian?)
Getting an inexpensive VooDoo2 as a add-on card seems a good
investment anyway.
The K6-2 333 by default should run at 3.5 x 95MHz. It would be a good
idea to set it to 3.5 x 100 = 350MHz. Much more is unlikely with that
chip, unless it's a brand new model with the new core.
