Specs are Sony Vaio Pentium 1.8 .. 512 meg ram..GF Ti200...Looking at getting a
new video card but don't want to put a small fortune into a soon to be obsolete
box (ain't they all :) Any suggestions on good mid price range card? Would the
ATI 9600 pro be a decent increase for the 150.00 or do? For Nvidia what would
be the logical choice? Mainly run NR2003 and the mods. Opinions welcome and
appreciated.

Well, I own a Ti4400 but the general opinion seems to be that the 9600 is
good all-round choice at the moment.  From what I understand, most people in
this group seem to feel that ATI's drivers are fine with games like N2003,
F1C, GPL etc.  Is that right ATI owners?

I went from a 4400 to a 9700 Pro recently and have been extremely
happy with it.

Yep. I use to think that not having as many driver options as Nvidia has
with all its beta drivers floating around would be a bad thing. I have not
misssed the driver of the week of Nvidia at all.  My second 3d video board
was the ATI Rage Maxx Fury and from that I went to a Geforce 2 then Geforce
3.  While the Nvidia performance was great I missed the visual quality of
the ATI cards. Now that I have a 9700 pro I have the best of both worlds.
Now I just need a better CPU to push it than my 2100xp.

I really like my 9700 Pro with cat 3.7 drivers, runs N2003 very well in
D3D - however, I am seeing some graphic corruption after installing the
patch for N2003.

Strange, it is working fine for me with the same setup.

Don't have a definitive answer for you but I bought a new video card
yesterday. The day before that I installed a new cpu. Getting my card
delivered tomorrow. Had a Athlon XP 1700+. Now have a 2400+. Had a Geforce3
Ti 200. Here is the deal on the new card...

      Description Qty  Price  Total
      Visiontek Xtasy G4 TI 4600
         [Item: 108489]  1 $122.00  $122.00
     Subtotal  $122.00
      Shipping  $13.94
      Tax  $0.00
      Total  $135.94

I understand it's not the greatest card in the world, but hey, look at what
you get for what you pay. The reason I say it's not the definitive answer is
that all the guys are happy with their ATI cards. No problem with that.
Nvidia may not have the best cards but when this card came out it was the
best available. Also it was about 400 bucks. Maybe you could find one for
about 175 on ebay if you are lucky. Anyway good luck.

Leftyx

BTW I run GPL, N2k3, and LFS on my current card and they run pretty good.
Can't wait to see what the new card does. Also I believe the ATI 9600 got
blown out by the TI4600.

Thanks all. Looks like it's down to the ATI 9600 of the G4 Ti 4600.

Yes, the 4600 beats the 9600 pro....until, you turn on anti-aliasing
and anisotropic, where the 9600 trounces the 4600.

Dan
I purposely didn't give the name of the company because I believe the
Ti4600 was a closeout at that price. I don't think they have anymore at that
price. I guess I got lucky.
On the other hand when I upgraded to the AthonXP2400+ the 3dmark2001
score only went up 200 but when I put in the Ti4600 it went up 4500 points
to about double what it was. That blew me away.
And on the other hand...whew that's a lot of hands... the guys with the
ATI 9600 says it beats the Ti4600 badly with AA and Aniso so they may have a
point.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I really am.

One thing about the Visiontek is it's the barebones card without tons of
software etc...most of which I don't want or need anyway. And it came with
PowerDVD whichi is a dynamite DVD player software.
