Video Card Suggestions?

by Richard J. Koche » Sun, 22 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a PII-350 with 64 megs of ram, a SB16, and a Diamond Stealth II
S220 Video card.  I get good framerates, but only if I am alone or far
away from other cars.  I would like to get a new video card to
compliment the PII.  I am leaning towards a Voodoo2, as I would use it
in GPL and Need For Speed 3 (or any current or future Glide-supporting
games), but I am wondering if not having an AGP card will be a
disadvantage in the future.  Is a RivaTNT or Rendition V2200 (the AGP
versions) worth it, or is the Voodoo2 that much faster?  Is the Voodoo2
picture quality as bad as I've read?  I would like to buy a card that
won't be terribly outdated in a few months, as I am only 16 and have a
limited budget.  By the way, the only games that I play are racing
games.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort,
Ryan Kocher

P.S.  I love VROC!!!  What is the best modem choice (56k) for online
racing?  Thanks again!!

Get a Voodoo2 card! The TNT isn't really viable yet with Legends as you have
to reduce the refresh on the mirrors to 1/8 to get a decent frame rate and
turn some of the detail down. With this config I get only 17-18 frames /sec
at the start of a race on a PII 450 and the picture is not great with the
detail turned down. With a V2 I get 23-25 frames at the start and 36 after
the first corner. The image quality on a V2 is fine, I can't see much
difference between it, a TNT, a Matrox G200 or an I740 on a 17" monitor on
D3D games, and the Voodoo is faster than any of them! Definitely the best
"bang per buck"
                                                            Cheers
