Video Card or Sound Card Tech Problem?

by Tom Pabs » Sun, 18 Jul 2004 03:28:04

Hi Guys....

I have a computer with something similar going on to the old problems of
"video distortion" on screen.....when using the wrong (bad) drivers for the
old SB Live sound cards.  I'm not sure that this current video problem is
because of that, but since this system is new but has an older SB Live, 5.1
X-gamer sound card, I thought it would be worth investigating.

The video anomaly, is vertical banding, usually two band just either side of
screen center, that oscillate with the sound variation of tone and volume.
It's worse with a V-8 engine than a V-4.....and that is what makes me think
it's a sound card driver problem.

However, I can't remember the cure for this.  Can anyone help....or does
anyone have this problem currently?  It happens in both Papy sims and ISI
(N2K3 and F1C).

I have a second computer system that is nearly identical......but does not
do this.  So, it's a perplexing problem.  I'd appreciate any tech feedback
from you guys that you can think of.

Regards,

Tom

PS:  Relative System specs:
Mobo: Msi K7 Master
CPU: 2.7 AMD
RAM: Corsair 333 (512mb)
Video: ATI 9800XT (256mb onboard)
Sound: SB Live 5.1 X-gamer (WinXP drivers)
OpsSys: WinXP (home)
DX: 9.1

Tom, try connecting another / different monitor to you system in question.
Make sure you use different cables too.
While this may seem simple, It sounds similar to a problem I had a while
back. I went crazy trying to trouble shoot it. Then I just tried an older
monitor I had sitting around. And just like, that my problem was gone! ;)

It's worth a try if you have not already done so.

If that's not it try swapping video cards. Sometimes there can be cold
joints (little cracks in the soldier) where the monitor output jack is
connected to the circuit board.
If possible try swapping sound cards too!

It's the old "process of elimination" thing.

Good luck to you.

Sure sounds like a driver prob, BUT did you make sure you don't have
speakers (or another EMF source) near the monitor?

Steve, Pete....

Thanks for the feedback.  Sorry for the delay in responding here......the
ALMS event here at Infineon had us really scrambling for the last week and
I've had very little "desk time" for email or newsgroups.....and no time to
deal with this video problem.

I should tell you that the video problem is on a racing simulator we are
building for a professional race team.  Because of that, there's some
limitations I have with regard to swapping monitors and hardware in and out.
It's not impossible, but not easy to do without disassembling the entire
simulator (in some cases, like the monitor which is built into the***pit).
It's not that I won't do those things.....but only if necessary.  I too
believe it's more likely a "driver" problem, or a video connection
issue....and I'll be looking into those things later this week when I can
get back to working on this.

I'm sure I'll have more questions or perhaps be looking for more
information.  I'll start a new string, since this one is getting back-dated.

Thanks again for your good input and thoughts.

Regards,

Tom

Well, if you can't move the screen 'cuz it's "embedded" in the, ah,
furniture, you can at least use those VGA cables with the magnetic traps
(big lumps in the cable near the connectors) to make sure it isn't the cable
picking up RFI/EMF.
