N4 sound problems with new sound card

by Brian Summer » Wed, 14 Mar 2001 14:10:18

I just got a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card and it seems to like all of
my games except for N4.  Get a lot of static and scratchy nosie with the
sound of the engine.  I downloaded the latest drivers for the card and it
did not help. I have tried running the EAX, Direct Sound, and A3D setups,
with 3d sound on and off, still no good. I am running Direct X 8.0a and Win
ME..  Is this a known problem with N4 and this card?  Is there a workaround?

Thanks

Wow, I'm having the same problem but I have different hardware. Soundblaster
live here. Installed the latest ME drivers. N4 is the only game I have that
acts this way, and it's just like you described static and scratchy noise. I
had this problem with Dx7a so I let N4 install DX8, but Dx8 didn't help.

Also, if I try to select 3D sound it crashes back to the desktop everytime.
It doesn't sound any better with direct sound, EAX, or A3d selected.

Any help on this greatly appreciated!

This is a common problem with better soundcards. I've got a Turtle Beach
Quadzilla and it has the same thing happening.

Something to do with the changes in Motherboards, the drivers for the cards,
the graphics card and companies that are too slack.

If you have a VIA MVP3 chipset, then a small file called "CPU to PCI Bridge
Latency Timer" might help. It allows you to set the latency timer to 0 clock
pulses. You can find it at :

If you have a different chipset, you might be able to set it to 0 in the
bios.....

Anyway, it's a very common problem.

Try running dxdiag and move the hardware sound acceleration slider to
"basic".  Acceptable sound, no static or crackles or pops.

Good tip Vince.  Reduced the static noise by about 80%, but now the voice of
the spotter only works sporadically.  Any other ideas?  Thanks

Yep, I had the same experience. Took out some of the static (not sure if I
would say 80%, but noticeable) and the announcer now fades in and out.

Also, I did an uninstall/reinstall for my sound card drivers and solved
whatever the problem was with getting the CTD when selecting the option for
3d sound.

Really annoying that this doesn't work. I'm not even that into sound, but
the static is really bothersome, especially now that I can't make it go
away.

No, I don't think it's an hardware issue.

None of my other games sound like this and most of the reviews I'm reading
for N4 do mention popping and hissing in the sound.
