Questions about Video, & Sound Cards, & Modems

by Tom Warde » Fri, 05 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I was wondering a couple of things.

First I was wondering if you ever hear of a company called NEWCOM??
And are they any good to buy there products from(Modems, CD-Roms,
etc...)

Now about the Sound Blaster 64 Sound Cards.  There are two different
kind, the SB 64-Bit Value(about $99), and the SB 64-Bit Gold(about
$199), and I don't know what the difference is between them is there
is any and which one do you suggest to get?

Next, I was wondering if you know what 3-DFx Card is the BEST on the
market(that isn't over $199??  I was looking at the StingRay($199), it
looks like a really good card, it uses the VooDoo Chip Set, but I was
wondering if you know of anything that is better than this.

Also, I am gonna get a NEW Modem.  I want a 56K, but I can get a 33.6
for $30 after a rebate.  I can also get a 56K for $100 after a rebate.
What do you think?

Thanks,

I can't speak for the first questions, but do some investigating before
investing in the 56k modem. I have 2 of them, one in new pc, and one in
older one. Both are Robotics, personally, I think their among the best.
However, I am not capable of getting x2 speeds. I thought I did everything
right to check this, did their linetest, came back x2 capable, got an isp
that had x2 support, yet I can only connect at 26400 max. I spent a lot of
time on the phone with the robotics folks, their support was great, and
every test they did by dialing into my system showed the problem was not in
the modem, but in the line. I had the phone company come out to check the
line, no problem. And of course, they tell you that these phone lines are
not made for high speed data flow. Well, finally throught the phone
company, found out that due to where my subdivision is located, there is an
additional substation that my phone line has to go through to connect to
the station in the city. Because of this, I won't be able to enjoy X2
speeds, and coulda saved some money by going with the 33.6 modems.Anyway,
try to determine before hand if you'll be able to get those x2 speeds,
might save some dissapointment.

SB awe64 Value has both line out and 4 watt amplified speaker out.
Both of these outputs use the mini stereo plug.

SB awe64 Gold has only line out.  There is a left and right RCA stereo
plug.  Leaving the built in 4 watt amp actually improved the quality
of the sound that this device is capable of.  The gold card also has
more onboard sound font memory.

For racing sims, all you need is a SB16.  You might want to get one
that has both line out (for headphones) and speaker out (for when you
have an audience).  Some speakers have headphone jacks anyway.

If you must get an awe64, the value card seems more useful to me.
