New STB Drivers & N2--Anyone tried?????

by Xpatr » Mon, 02 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I have seen some posting (pro & con) lately, re the new STB drivers.  Has
anyone tried them with N2----results??   I have a Dell P2 with a STB Velocity,
and have finally got it working great with N2, and hate to fix what's not
broke....know what I mean??????  However, there is always room for improvement.
Just wondering if I'll get improvement or headaches.

I tried to put the new drivers in and then spent the next couple hours fixing
what it messed up.  All I could get to show was the TV out driver even though
in the directory the other drivers were listed.  After getting everything fixed
I tried again...read above statment concerning time...  Untill I get a clear
idea on how to and what I screwed up I'll stick with what I have.
If you successfully get then in or anybody else does please let me in on the
process.

Have a good day

Hi Randy,
Do you have the AGP version? Man I just returned N2 as I
could not get it going despite trying all the various hints given here.
I have never even gotten the N2 demo to run. I have tried full dos,
windowed dos, and even windows no luck ;-( I did get as far as the cool
intro avi once. Then I tried full dos no intro as others have said here but
no luck. When I called Sierra they said I needed a vesa bios extender chip.
Having just gotten this STB looking so good in all my other sims I was
reluctant to change anything for now. BTW which W95 version are you
running? Thanks Mike

Yep.  The AGP one that came with my Dell XPS D300.

Hm, I have had zero problems with it.  But then again I never get the
intro.  I just run the NASCAR2.EXE (or NROS.EXE) and no intro comes
up.

What have you done with refresh rates?  You might want to tune the
refresh rates for each resolution.  On a 15" monitor like the NEC
Multisync 3FGX, I set the 640x480 resolutions to 72 Hz, and so when
the card switches resolution it goes into a refresh rate that works
well.

Weird.

I'm using the latest OEM version that is supplied by Dell.

Well after sending this I figured if others get it going so can I .
Which I did by going into the N2.EXE and properties/advanced and checking
Dos mode etc.
Now it runs but with no sound which I think I have heard is a demo prob?
Also seems so slow. Not so much in fps but speed of the car I will play
with it and see if its my throttle.

This may be something. I am at 100 Hz refresh & 800x600 on a 17" Dell Ds
1728D-LS
During the set up of controls I get flashing which seems related to refresh
rates.
I will play with these as well thanks for your suggestions.

New STB Drivers & N2--Anyone tried?????

Well, I finally got N2 to work with the STB Velocity128 by reading
this at the sierra web site:
From sierra tech support bulletin boardt:

We have found on the Riva128 based video cards, when these
cards
switch to the vesa 2.0 mode, the card sets the refresh rate
to an
frequency that no monitor can support. The best way that we
have
been able to get the game to run is to run the game in DOS
mode
without the intro. If you do not have all of you drivers
loading for
DOS, you may need to contact the computer manufacturer to get
the
drivers loaded for the CD Rom, the sound card and the mouse.
Then,
install the game in DOS mode and run the game without the
intro. To
run the game without the intro file, run the nascar2.exe
instead of the
n2.bat. Please let me know if you have any further problems.

[run it in DOS]

We have the same system. Are you saying you don't have to boot to DOS
to run N2? I was at STB last night, and thought I already had the
latest drivers. Maybe not?

It is doubly complex for me- I play Quake2, and in order to get the
OpenGL with the Velocity128 I'll need to put in beta drivers just for
quake then remove them for everything else. I hear it isn't that bad,

Simple solution for me for N2 and my AGP STB Velocity 128 was to download
Scitech's display doctor.  No problems after I installed it.  Its $44.95 or
something.
