GPL - where's the sim part?

by Destro » Sun, 08 Nov 1998 04:00:00

As good as GPL is, it sure is missing alot of things; as are all other
racing sims. Its more like 3/4 of a sim than a full sim. Why? Glad you
asked. :)

If you compare todays flight sims to todays race sims, racing sims are
missing quite a few details.

In a good flight sim like MS FlightSim98 or Flight Unlimited 2 you get
virtually a complete sim. You have to talk to the tower, taxi, request
landing permission, adjust flaps and even start the plane up. Most of
the details are there that a pilot has to go through.

In GPL you start off in pit lane when it would really be more
interesting to start in the paddock or garage.

In GPL the car is already running when to be more real one should have
to flip a few switches and press the start button to fire the car
up.(They did have starters right? <shrug>)

Also making ones way from the paddock to pit lane should be implemented
just like you need to taxi in a plane to the runway.

More yet, one should have to wait for visually view permission from the
pit marshal or crew chief  to exit pit out.

And how about a few people in pit lane for once doing normal pit thing.

I guess what I'm trying to get at here is racing sims usually only have
driving and some mechanical tweak things in them. How about a full
complete racing sim for once that can come to or exceed todays flight
sim standards for realism and driver responsibilities.

Any comments are welcome.

(Second  posting of the ridiculous "GPL isn't a flight sim argument"
deleted...)

How about this one..."Welcome to my kill-file."

come on up to Boston and you can simulate doing my job so I can play more
GLP!  sounds like you're really into the details ;-)

Last time I went flying, We had to do a complete walk around inspection of
the plane, and drain some fuel from each tank to check for water
contamination. No flight sim on the market makes us do that.

Most likely, they didn't. I can't say for certain about 1967 F1 cars, but
most race vehicles at that level have no on board starters, no charging
systems, just a battery big enough to power the ignition for the duration
of the race (total loss ignition system)

I'd have to say that the details that matter al already in place. I don't
want to do extensive pre-flights in a flight sim, and I don't think hitting
a starter button in a car sim would add to the experience.

I bet you're the kind of person who wonders why no-one ever goes to the toilet in Hollywood.

My comments:
I'm not particularly interested in any of the features you mentioned.  In
fact, I found most of those tedious in flight sims.  I really don't care about
taxi'ing or having toe brakes.  It was a pain in the a** with real Cessnas,
don't really care to do it in F15's.  As for a car sim, I'd much MUCH rather
see them work on (in rough order):
1. AI
2. AI
3. AI
More specifically:
 (a) teamates not running each other off
 (b) backmarkers getting out of the way (okay, grudgingly...)
 (c) realistic strategy for pitting (pit when behind backmarkers, not with 50
L of fuel as sometimes happens in F1RS).
 (d) more individual characteristics (some aggresive, some gentlemanly, etc).

I think Papyrus' driving sims are right there with the best of the flight
sims, if not ahead.  Maybe as they don't have to worry about weapons,
avionics, etc.  "Just" driving physics, AI, and graphics :-)

I like the thought, but we must also realise that this would all take up
a lot of developing time. It's not a significant detail for racing and
thus I'd rather have them spend more time on the racing part. But... if
we ever reach a point where we are satified with the driving part in a
sim (if ever?), it would be welcome enhancment to the sim.

Absolutely a classic response. Love it...
I'll be fighting not to use it every time some nitpicker nitpicks.

Not that they haven't tried tho... Travolta went to the bathroom TWICE
in Pulp Fiction... the first time, Uma Thurman OD'd on his stash while
he was in there, the second time, Bruce Willis got the drop on him and
killed him as he was coming out.

With those sort of results, don't expect anyone in Hollywood to go to
the bathroom again any time soon... it's just too risky.

You missed one very important detail here. Where is the winner's cheque when we win a
race? And the game never even came with a bottle of champaign to pour over our heads
either! Just not a sim at all really, is it?

He also went to the toilet in the restaurant at the "end" of the movie
while the place was being robbed. That seemed to be a theme of the
movie, whenever anything was happening JT was in the crapper.

Cheers!

Forgot about that one... I guess bad things really do come in threes... :)
