I don't know about all your comments, but I think your right.  It's funny
no-one has beaten it in, 2 years (???).

Wait for WSC though, it will be worth the wait.

Somehow I think part of the attraction of GPL is the raw simplicity.  There
is no secret set-up formula which will make you quick.  Being quick only
comes with practice, lots of practice! Also there is no pit strategy, races
are won by the most simple method; who is the quickest driver.  Though the
basics are simple, the physics model is obviously very complex and there are
many very subtle touches (such as the way tyres lose grip when they
overheat) that you only get to notice after a long time with the sim when
these things make a differance to your driving.

I liked Viper and N4 better. I realize I'm in the minority though.

I don't have viper, but I do have N4 and GPL.  I think GPL has a better FF
implementation.  I think FF is actually useful in GPL, as opposed to being
just a bell or whistle.  Haven't worked out the setups in N4 though yet -
maybe this is where I'm lacking the correct feel?

I wish they would make a CART sim based on the GPL engine.

Not to mention a really simple game interface that even a berk like me can
find his way around, and the ease of adding new circuits if we get bored of
the old ones (like that's gonna happen at Nurburgring!).

GPL itself is ofcourse fantastic, but all the user-addons make it last
so long. WinVROC, GPLRank, all the extra tracks and graphic updates..
I played GPL a couple of weeks ago at a friend, and he hadn't
installed any of the graphic and sound updates.
It was allmost shocking to see how old the standard GPL looked
compared to my version with all the updates installed :)

I haven't installed any new graphics/sounds either.  Well, I added a more
noticeable skidding sound.  That helped me better tell when the car was on the
limit.
