SB Live! and GPL (yes, again!)

SB Live! and GPL (yes, again!)

by Doug Olse » Mon, 12 Apr 1999 04:00:00

OK, OK, I know this has already been asked at least once, but I can't
remember what the outcome was, so here it is one more time:

I've just installed an SB Live! Value, and it works brilliantly for
everything *EXCEPT* GPL. In GPL, the engine noise is permeated by static. My
AWE64 used to generate a small amount of background noise, but nothing like
this! I've tried the usual fixes (moving the SB Live! away from my video
card, stepping the video card accel. down one notch, reinstalling various
drivers etc), and nothing seems to help.

Does anyone have a quick fix for this one?

Thanks!

What type of system do you have?

Super 7 boards based on the VIA MVP3 chipset have a problem with the SB Live
making all kinds of unpleasant noises.  Static, popping crackling, etc.

The best way to lessen it (nothing eliminates it in GPL, in my experience)
is to disable UDMA hard drive capability in BIOS.  Not a perfect solution,
but for your ears sake, one you ought to try if you have one of these
motherboards.  I did and I hardly noticed the difference in day to day use
and it made GPL more enjoyable.

If you have an Intel based board, the noise you hear may be normal.  On my
new board (Abit BH6), the SB Live is still noisier in GPL than my old SB64.

Thanks for the tip!

I disabled UDMA and it has made a significant
difference.  I've only ran GPL for a few minutes
so far, but it seemed a lot better.  I fired up
Isreali Air Force, which also had a lot of static,
and it was perfectly clean too.

I have an awful static sound in GPL, but disabling the UDMA in the
BIOS is not by any means recommended if you have UDMA hdd's installed,
as hdd performance will decrease. And in some systems it  might even
cause some I/O mismatch. As you said, not a perfect solution.
Surely there must be another way around it, I will start at the
possible causes (on my systems anyway) tonight, after work, I am very
persistent...
