SB Live + MSFF + GPL?

by Randy Wilso » Sat, 09 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Anybody had any (or heard of any) experience with GPL, SoundBlaster Live
& MS ForceFeedback Wheel.

Thinking of replacing my SB Awe64 with an SB Live to expunge yet another
resource clogging ISA device.

Can I expect any improvements or differences (aside from my wallet being
$100 lighter:)?

Thanks

Randy

A friend of mine has just installed the MS FFwheel and the SBLive card
and the wheel refuses to work?

He has no joystick gameport option in his control panel, devices
section? (he is using win98) he is also using a Celery on an Abit m/b.

I've run out of ideas and we cannot get it working? (We have renewed
the sb drivers, re-installed the sb card, and even swapped slots, but
still the wheel gets a "not detected" message?

Anyone else got any ideas?

I have this combo and it works fine.  I moved up from a SBAWE32 PnP.  GPL
has no FF, though  :(

Hi there

I gained 2 fps after installing the SB-Live and enjoy an much better sound
( my old soundcard was an SB16 ) / pII 300 64MB, Hercules Thriller Rendition
8MB
The MS-Wheel works fine with the SB-Live, maybe a bit more precise, but that
can be just imagination...

I don't like the Racing-enviroment effects the SBLive provides in GPL
altough the 3d-sound w/o Effects is great )but in Nascar99 with an new
sound downloaded somewhere they are great...

I have that same combination, and I never had a better wheel, soundcard or
racing sim... hmm, sums it up nicely, doesn't it? And it's worth it, although
it should cost more than $100?

I had the same problem with no gameport showing in the control panel.
The solution was to add new hardware manually and select "audio,
video, game controller/Microsoft/gameport joystick" or something. The
soundcard was detected correctly, but the gameport on it wasn't.
Weird. Maybe this helps.

The SBLive value bulk is in that ballpark (here, at least). What are
opinions on the SBLive value, as opposed to the full product? I'm not
a musician, so I think I can live without those newfangled digital
input options. Are there other (more inportant for sim racing)
features missing from the Value edition.

And how fares the SBLive in GPL? How about that static noise one hears
so much about? My old trusty SB16 does not show those defects, but
it's ISA and therefore subject to being replaced soon.

Uff, missread his posting, thought he would get all three toys for $100...

I think the boards are identical, the Value just missing some software
for musicians and an aditional connector panel (?).

I got the SB Live for its 4 speaker capability and because my SB128 screwed
up GPL! Actually I hear some little pops with the fictional cars, but that
could be the add-on sounds from the net. I have to try the original sounds
sometime...

Hi Wolfgang, I've got a SB Live Value. I still have static, but
otherwise I like it over my old Montego Turtle Beach. I don't like the
preset sounds they have for racing, but the no effects stereo are good.
BTW they just released a patch so you can use a surround sound reciever
to hear the sounds. That's what I do and it sounds good.

Of course your opinion may be different.

Also Baldur's Gate supports the SB Live audio and sounds great.

That would be quite a deal, wouldn't it? :)

That's what I understood from the info on the various SB websites,
too. But it's not stated explicitly.

One more question: what about DOS / SB16 compatibility? The website
says "we have achieved almost 100% SB16 compatibility" which my
built-in sales talk analyzer translates into "the thing probably won't
work with old software." ;) Will the card work with, say, ICR2 or GP2?

Thanks everybody for answering.

I have the Value edition (And I am a musician).  What it lacks of importance
is the digital in/out header card.  All the environmental audio/3D stuff is
there.  There may be some software  not included in the bundle, but it would
be specific to the digital processing stuff and wouldn't matter to a gamer.
There is more than enough configuration to play with as it is.

I have yet to have a problem with anything I threw at it, including old DOS
games galore.  I have used it with ICR2 (dos version) without difficulty,
but that was in a windowed session in side Win98.  It loads this in the
autoexec.bat:

C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM

It is an SB16 emulator.  It reports on the screen when you are booting up.
As far as complete compatability, I couldn't say, but I can say I have
gotten sound in everything I have tried to run.  I have an ancient DOS
arkanoid clone called "Turoid", and it sounds completely different and LOTS
better than it ever did with an SB16 or an SBAWE32.  One neat thing is the
slider in one of the SBLive's control panels that lets you specify maximum
number of WAV sounds heard.  The slider goes up to 32.  That way, when you
slide the GPL slider up to 16, you know you aren't exceeding your sound
card's abilities.

Hope this helps someone
