John, I have the SB Live! and I would highly recommend it. You will need to
have 4 speakers to get the full effect, but for $100 + rear speakers, I
have to say it's one of the best upgrades for gamers.
Here's some info from my perspective;
1) SB Live with N2 -- YUCK! Spotter sounds like he's in a barrel if you use
any of the fx. We both know the sound with N2 has been an issue since it's
release and the SB Live! doesn't do much to enhance it. On the other hand,
NR99 sounds much better (though I still don't have my presets exactly
right - spotter still sounds kinda "hollow").
2) GPL - Oh yeah!! That's what I'm talking about! Unless you live in a
mansion (or your speakers REALLY suck) you should be able to wake the kids,
make the dog howl and REALLY annoy the wife from anywhere on the premises!!
I really like the way you can balance the speakers and make it sound (when
balanced correctly) and feel like the motor is behind/under you.
3) Haven't tried Quake - sorry. DeerHunter 2, Outlaws, Madden 99, WorldCup
98, all sound excellent though!
Hope it helps,
jp
