N2/NROS - SB PCI128 Soundcard Problems

by Tim Deatherag » Fri, 16 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I just bought a PIII 450 mhz with a Soundblaster PCI 128 soundcard, a
Viper550 video card ( and I'm waiting on the Monster 3dII card), I got
NR1999m working OK,  Ten working ok, but I can't get N2 within NROS working
!!!!!!

Now when I set up the Soundblaster PCI 128 Soundcard I use the Soundblaster
Stereo settings and I test the sound the spotter says " Yes, indeed, deed,
deed, deed, deed, deed, deed, deed ................"and loops until I
ctrl-alt-del  out of it !!!!!!!

I tried to auto detect and it chooses the Ensonig Sound card with an
Address=330 IRQ=NONE and DMA=1 which doesn't match up to the blaster
settings which are A220, I7, D1, T2

Also I copied the sound.cfg from NR1999 which uses the Ensonig card BUT
doesn't work. DO I need to downgrade soundcards??????????????

What do I do now !!!!!

if youre using windows 98..right click my computer goto properties...device
manager..sound  video and game controllers ...click on the entry ..sound
blaster pci128 legacy device...look in dos application settings..these are
the right things to enter when configuring the soundcard in nr1999 since it
is working in emulation mode..i think ,,,hope this helps...

Use autodetect and the Ensoniq.  Hit the test button.  There is a pause,
but it works.

If you want to use Soundblaster settings, you have to use soundblaster
mono.

Warning - The soundblaster choice sucks.  There is a terrible delay
between action and sound. IE... when you hit the wall, you see the
sparks, but it's 2 seconds before the sound happens.

I've tested both.  The Ensoniq is the best choice.

I found the best setting was to choose SB mono. It never worked
properly (in the DOS game) when I selected Ensoniq.

Are you running in pure DOS, or DOS as launched by Win95?

The Ensoniq setting takes a few seconds before the test 'pattern' is
heard (I.E. Ned's "Ten-Four, good buddy)  :)

I have found the delays between action (hitting the wall) and sound to
be far too great to accept when using the emulated soundblaster pro mono
setting.

Maybe I crash harder than you do, and it knocks the computer silly for a
few seconds :)

Both. I would get sound in the intro by not the game. I am using a
SBPCI64 (Ensoniq AudioPCI with the 1370 Ensoniq chipset).

That isn't Ned Jarrett.

I use "SB mono" not "SB Prop mono" and don't get any delays at all
in the DOS version of the game. I found that the sound changed (like
engine pitch and scrapping the wall) in the Windows only version of
N99.

Could be :-)
