It's time for me to upgrade. I was wondering if anybody is using the old (big
red) Logitech FF wheel with Win XP. I seem to remember that XP wouldn't
recognize it as a serial device and Logitech doesn't offer any drivers since
the wheel was discontinued. I have a serial to USB adapter for it, but will the
Wingman control panel work?

It *should* work fine with the adapter, as that's all mine is using (on
Win2K) and is all that came with the wheel in the first place.

Mine works perfectly in XP using the USB port. But F1 2001
ran great. Same FF as in W98.

Thanks, Cisko. One more question. Does it recognize split axis for the pedals?

pedals?

Be warned!  The LWFF *GP* works OK in Win2K/XP, but the original LWFF, even
when using the USB adapter, has some FF issues with F1 2001, F1 2002, GTR
2002 etc.  The frame rate is roughly halved when enabling FF with these
games.  I'm not sure if it's only VIA based motherboards that suffer the
problem since I've only tested it on those.  Logitech acknowleged the
problem on their web site but say that the wheel is too old for them to
support with newer OSes and it may not even be their fault.  Apparently all
Logitech wheels since the LWFF have had different firmware and aren't
affected by the problem.

Other games like GPL, N2002, LFS work fine with the LWFF in XP so it's a
little peculiar.  Split axis is fine too.  I've been forced to install my
old copy of win98 on another partition just so I can play F1 200X with FF.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Or running 98SE on a second hard drive. It
is the original Logi FF that I'm talking about. Is the frame rate hit with it
only with XP?

Yeah, the original one with the red, totally *** wheel.  The frame rate
hit only occurs in F1 200X and only in Win2K and WinXP.

pedals?

All of my pedals are on the same axis, so I have no idea.

What? You have got to be joking. I am using F1 2002 with a full field
1024x768
with all graphics maxed and a totally fluid frame when starting a quick race
from
the rear...

You just destroyed your credibility.  Not even an overclocked P4 4.0GHz with
a NV FX or Rad 9700 pro is capable of that.

Really?  What chipset does your motherboard use?

Well, I was going to use 98SE because of the old Logi wheel I'm using,
but now I hear that an ATI 9700 isn't compatible with 98. It looks
like my only alternative is to use Win ME since it's compatible with
both the wheel and the 9700.

I think you would be far better off getting a new wheel than living with
Windows ME, the Hadley-Watson of Operating Systems.

Have you ever tried one of the old style Logitechs?  :)

Do not go with WinME. That OS is the biggest pile of ***I've ever seen.
FWIW I had no problems with my LWFF under XP but I also only run Papy sims.
