Racer & Logitech FF calibration?

by R Keatin » Sat, 29 Dec 2001 08:24:26

In the latest version of Racer (and maybe other versions), it appears that I
need to calibrate the pedals of my Logitech FF Wheel (old red one, using
split axis.)  I chose the correct controller in the Racer Configure utility.
but can I calibrate the pedals somehow?

Here is what is happening.  When I start up Racer and select race, the car
just drives away. It appears that the brake works, but the throttle is
always on at a fair amount.  It also appears that my full throttle is way
less than what full should be.

This is the same setup I use in N4 and GPL without problems so at least I
know it works in general.

Thanks,
Russell

Ditto

I too have the "older" style Red LWFF and I've experienced the same thing
Russell, so it's not just you or your setup.

You may want to try the 'Controller test utility' (which is installed
with v0.4.9). Then see what axes the wheel uses and how far the values
are varied.

Then check this with the data/ctrlsets/lwff.ini file (or whichever you
appear to use; there are some variations; see racer.ini's ini.controls
value). You can change the min/max values in the lwff.ini file to
match your wheels. Normally though, most axes just move from 0..1000.

In the Controller Peeker program it comes up with the "X Axis:", "Y Axis",
"POV" and "Buttons" highlighted.  Turning my wheel left to write changes the
"X Axis" value.  Pressing on the gas changes the "Y Axis" value.  Pressing
on the brake change the "Z Rotation" (non-highlighted) value.

The main change I made was to set the throttle axis=y.  The original file
had it set as axis=slider0.  I don't know what slider 0 is on this wheel.
This changed enabled the accelerator to work properly.

I can't get the brake pedal to work even putting in the values show in
Peeker or reversing them.  I can map the brakes to a button, but that Z axis
remains a mystery.

If you have any other ideas I'd be glad to try them out.  I am guessing that
the fact that the "Z Rotation" isn't highlighted might be a clue.

Thanks making your work available for us to play around with (and as if that
weren't enough), for the support that you give.

Russell

The Z rotation axis is 'rz'. Does your brake axis use 'axis=rz'?

From DirectX7 to DX8, some axes changed place. slider0 and rz were
changed for a number of controllers. Perhaps using brake.axis=rz
works.

There is also an info screen (press Ctrl-I repeatedly) which shows the
axis values from within Racer itself. Try looking at what axis seems
to be the brake.

That is weird, but I don't think Racer itself accepts only axes that
DX enumerates (which would be a bug in DX it seems, if RZ stays gray),
but just accepts any axis if you specify it.

You're welcome. :)

Racer & Logitech FF calibration?

Ruud,

I found a problem with my Direct-X installation.  It complains about a bad
registry input in the "input" section.  Of course the solution they
recommend is to re-install Direct-X and of course that solution doesn't help
at all ... what a surprise :(.

Until I can get that fixed, I won't have a clean setup to continue testing.
When ... if I get it fixed and have more information to pass on, I will.

Thanks,
Russell

Ok, good luck with that.
Perhaps it's a nice time to upgrade to DX8.1 (tremble!).
