Picked up F1 2001 today !!

by S. Spark » Wed, 03 Oct 2001 15:37:22

Well got my little mitts on EA's F1 -2001 today. For those interested I live
in Queensland ,Australia. Initial impressions very good.
My system ..P2-400, 192 MB RAM, 32MB Voodoo 4 -4500. As you can see, not a
very powerful system but seems to run well at 1280x1024 with medium detail
levels.
Can't wait to see it on my soon to arrive P4-1.8 and GeForce 3 :-)

Anyway,
It has a rather skimpy 32 page manual which doesn't go into too much detail
about the menu settings.
Car setting are quite good and allow control over Fast and slow bump
stops,Rebounds,Spring rates,Packers,Ride height,Camber,Type
pressure,Wings,Diff lock,Brake Bias,Anti roll bars,gearing.

Sound.
Adequate ,pit crew communication nice, has the doppler effect as you go under
bridges,signs etc.

Graphics.

speed. Starts to get a little bogged down when more cars on screen but that
is probably due to my system inadequacies. Will go up to 1600x1200 32bit for
those with the computing muscle. It has a automatic detail setting or you
can set everything yourself. Rain effect is good with general shower or
monsoon level.

One thing I do like is the training mode where every track is divided into
sections and you are co-pilot ?/ in the 2 seater Arrows or Minardi. The
driver will take you through each stage using the optimal speed and racing
line then hand control over to you. If you perform the tests well you are
awarded grades to go on to the next section.

The general "feel" of the sim is good with powerslides possible and lot's of
tweeking possibilities for controllers and car alike.

Anyway this is only a brief account and I have really only spent about 1 and
1/2 hours with it so far.
Will keep you posted !!

Hi,

thanks for the short review, especially since it's done on a lower range
system such as mine. I've heard rumors of no force-feedback being
implemented; is that really so?

That scares me a bit as the force involved in Force Feedback comes quite
easily from the physics if its done correctly.  Hopefully it was a case of,
"we will do it later when we have time" and they never got round to it.

Either case, i'll probably be outside EB on Friday morning :)

I tried the game, and it runs REALLY bad compared to all other
F1 games....No, make that all other racing games...maybe even all
other games.

I get about 5fps at most with most of the things set to high on my P3
1ghz and geforce2...and things like mirrors aren't even on.

The game does run pretty good if you turn it to medium everything, but
then the picture quality is blurry and your missing tons of scenery
and even then its not exactly running that smooth.

The game was supposed to run like 3x better than F1CS, but its more
like 3x worse.

There is no ForceFeedback in the game.

Besides those things, the game is way better than F1CS in every way,
The track is ALLOT more detailed than F1CS or F1RC as well. Although I
think F1RC track is more accurate.

They have a 3 seater arrows in there to.
The***pit is the best in any f1 game.
Suspension is the best as well.

Ahh, I found out why it ran so bad!
The game has a problem with some Geforce cards
running the newer 12 drivers.

You have  to go back to old 6. ones or run it in window mode.
Now the game runs like normal.

When I drive 340 km/h in real car the scenery is quite blurry too...:)
...and I'm missing tons of scenery too...

You could also add 15 to that and try the 21.81 drivers. :)

F1 2001 you say? Aren't all programs 2002 versions now? Like MS Word 2002,
MS Publisher 2002, NAV 2002?

Oh so sorry, I thought this has the "What?  No F1 Bashing on R.A.S. ?????"
Thread. :-)
